The quality of 3-way sockets has gotten so bad they rarely last very long beofre failing. ZThe lack of spring tension on the ring contasct on the bulb base does not help things. The biulb has to be screwed in a thight to get a decent connection it smashes the center contact flat so it no longer works correctly. I have changed to using a dimming socket (arund $12) and 150 W halogen A-bulbs.
