I have a 9'tall, 9'deep, 15' wide space in my closet--what to do?
Comments (4)GW has a problem with ' and " in titles -- So I'm just going to guess that your space is 9 feet tall by 9 inches deep by 15 inches wide? If that's the case, something like Kirkhall suggested -- a full-length mirror on hinges covering a shallow shelving section would be fabulous. Use the shelves for jewelry, scarves, belts, accessories -- the kinds of items you might have to try on with your outfit to see if they work. You could also do open shoe shelves, but I'm thinking your space isn't quite deep enough......See MorePlease help me design my narrow 36" wide Pantry/Appliance closet!
Comments (13)Thanks for your responses everyone! I appreciate each and every one. Kippy -- looks like your pantry will be super functional! Unfortunately can't add any more width to our pantry. Stan -- thank you for your input. I think I agree with you on the 8" counter. No can do. Also thanks for your suggestion on the 4" shelves just on one side. That might do the trick! Practigal and Looklake -- the 18" pull-outs sound dreamy, but I really really really want a 36"x24" countertop. Those appliances need to be out of my way. I would leave them out if I used them consistently at least once a week, but there are times when I use them every other day, or not at all for weeks at a time. And Looklake, the size of the pantry is hardly ideal...we are turning a coat closet into a pantry and the size cannot be changed. Karenseb -- when you say pull-outs, do you mean drawers or roll trays? The roll trays would waste more space, right? And any idea what the weight limits might be? Also would it be ok that the pull-outs couldn't fully extend? Since I only have 45" total pantry depth minus the 24" depth of the base cabinet....See MoreNarrow tall dresser? Comments (2)that was going to be my suggestion--a narrow shelf unit with baskets. There are lots of storage cubes w/ fabric boxes and other pullout stuff that are 12" wide. There are also 15" ones. But you could also look for the "drawer" containers/bins, and then have a simple bookcase made to hold them perfectly (bookcases aren't that expensive to have made). You lose space to the drawer box and drawer slide, so narrow stuff isn't that useful. One last idea: kitchen cabinets. Base cabinets are normally pretty deep--14"-- but sometimes you can find 15"- or 18"-deep base cabinets that are all drawers. This one from Ikea is 15" deep. http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/S19036706/ You'd need to come up with some sort of countertop, but a woodworker might be willing to make one with a routed edge. Either from paintable MDF, or by doing something a little fancier. If you want to go taller, you could stack them. (I thought Ikea's were boxes without built-in toekicks, but it looks like they stopped making them that way, You could just stack them w/ the toekick, or you could see about cutting the toekick away. Then there's also the idea of custom. It's worth looking into--it might not be as much as you think. Especially if you're willing to use a premade drawer setup of some sort. And especially if you don't want a fancy finish, etc. I'd check into this from some kitchen-cabinet maker. Also, you can't easily do drawers even with your shoulders. You can't see in them!...See MoreHow to organize deep and narrow closet
Comments (6)How much do you have to hang? I had two similarly-shaped closets once. One closet was uner a slope in the roof, but it was 4’ or 5’ wide, so there was room for hanging on one side. I added 1’-deep shelves on the other side. At the back, I put a couple of elfa drawer stacks. The other closet was under the stairs and served as the guest closet, it was about 3’ wide. The rod stayed at the front, and at the back i again added elfa drawer stacks. Oh, I had another closet under stairs. Probably 2.5’ wide like yours, but the door was on the side, not at the end. It was pretty hard to use. I think we just stashed stuff in there. So, I wonder whether you can put wheeled drawer stacks and wall racks and hooks in your closet, and get a freestanding closet like from ikea for the bedroom itself? Kind of flipping the norm of a dresser/chest of drawers in the bedroom and hangers in the closet....See Moreapple_pie_order
