Remodeling Bathrooms Design Dilemma

Backsplash gone wrong! Help please

We had our guest bath remodeled in the last few weeks. Our designer was on a course the day the vanity backsplash was grouted.
Her team called me in to show me the grouted backsplash and it looked very nice, however it was darker than I had imagined and looking towards the ungrouted shower I knew I didnt want it to look dark. I was able to reach her and when I asked if the shower could have lighter grout she said ok. I advised her I would go to the store to get a lighter grout and while I was there was able to reach her and she told me not white and picked a lighter color. I returned home and gave it to the tilers who proceeded to grout the tub area.
When the designer came that night she was upset with her crew and me. She lectured me that they should have waited on her to grout the tub area and now the backsplash would have to be acid etched and grout lightened and it would take time and a cost of $600.
I asked if we could leave the 2 sections with different grout as the area us slightly broken up but she said no it would have to be done this way.
The vanity backsplash was redone and now the grout is rough, uneven, the tile outline looks muddled and not crisp. On top of that they also didnt protect the counter from the acid and now it has rough spots.
Her crew, as well as her assistant and I, have used sandpaper which helped in some areas, but other areas remain looking very unprofessional and I'm disappointed with how it looks now.
She wants to wrap up the job by tomorrow or Friday but I want her to resolve the issue since her "fix" really made it look worse. I've asked her for other suggestions but nothing.
What options are there for fixing it?

It sounds like everyone, including YOU, is working for this designer. Shouldn’t she be working for you? And on site making important design decisions instead of at a course? And apologizing to you for not being there and causing this issue...instead of being upset with you? The dynamics of that whole relationship sound way, way off. You should not have to pay for her crew’s mistakes in implementing HER ‘fix’ to an issue that happened largely because she was absent from your job site to go to a course. I’m sorry this is happening and hope you can reset the boundaries and roles in this relationship to get an appropriate resolution.

I appreciate your opinion. I just want it resolved but from what others are saying it is no longer a relatively easy fix, and she is not coming with any other solutions, probably because she knows she is ultimately the reason the tile is now in the state it is in.

Just to clarify, because I'm a little confused. The tile is all going to be stacked and all the same size regardless if it's the glass or the opaque? The glass row will only be 1 tile tall, so you're trying to decide how many stripes and that will tell you how many tiles high of the opaque tiles you will use? Yes, mahlgold, you've got it right. My head was starting to spin, trying to explain it! :-) Thanks for asking for clarification. I have wanted glass mosaic all along, and I had something very similar in my last kitchen, so I am ready for the grout lines. The challenge was to bring a subtle suggestion of horizontality (is that even a word?) to the wall, to help ameliorate what I perceive as an imbalance on the range wall, as you may recall. So, yes, it will be quite different from the inspiration pic in overall effect. But, that was one of the ways I found to bring in a "horizontal" element. Yes, I do feel lucky at the moment. I see you are continuing to struggle. It is so hard. And, often when I think I am there, something shifts. I always wonder when it will end and if this time I really have it right. One thing interesting my husband said yesterday as we discussed all the different ways to use the Sandstone and pale blue together was that really any of them would look good. He's right and it helped me relax a bit. Just a bit. :-)

I agree with up to the underside of the hood -- nothing above. We used a very similar hood (might be the same one) in a reno about five years ago. We had no uppers on the range wall, so had the backsplash across the entire wall, full height. We then installed the hood OVER* the tile. On the off chance you're considering running the tile above the hood, installing the hood over (in front of) the tiles eliminates the problem of getting the tile flush to the curved glass hood. It requires a bit of furring out so you can mount everything flush, but it worked out fine for us. *because one would think the tile went all across the wall, but I was a little itsy bitsy bit short on tile, so we left a hole behind the range hood chimney. Shhh . . . don't tell!!

But at the same time if a little tiling will tie up the project, then I'm game. jodi_socal: I'm a little disappointed when you said fire and ice won't work. I just LOVE that F&I BS. But then agin, I think I know all along it's a little too much for my kitchen. Caryscott & petra: Thanks for the picture petra, it says a thousand words. Is spectralight glass tiles? Prices are pretty reasonable. What about that milk green color? will it work? maybe with some garnet pieces sparingly mixed in. I will take some pictures and post two HD Behr's paint card to aid in the discussion of color. Thanks again ALL! Hey, Cloud! Is yours the blue kitchen, by chance?! When they did the first installation and I had my doubts, I start searching GW and found someone's beautiful blue kitchen w/ full granite backsplash, and I was indeed trying to find shots of well done installs. I couldn't quite find a close-in shot among your earlier photos...thanks so much. So helpful. My two windows are undercabinet cutouts (about 4-5" of space between window bottoms and counter), and while the installer offered a lip/sill as an option, I was looking for a cleaner look to the facade of the backsplash -- plus, more corners sticking out just meant more that would risk getting chipped. I can just see us sliding our glass salt/pepper shakers across the cabinet and constantly hitting those corners. :) Below is a profile shot of one of the windows...latest version. I could've cropped the pic more closely, but then you'd all miss seeing my refrigerator in the background that's been parked in our family room for six months!!!! Maybe it hurts less to insert some humor into all of this. This was their 'best we can do, ma'am' on Monday. I'm just noticing NOW that they left the upper joint completely uncaulked! And see the gloppy line silicone at the lower edge? They didn't even try to tool it. The company owner, who was there, said that since it seemed I was so bothered by seeing the black line in between granite pieces, he said a bead of caulk would be better. Ugh...I'm just so done. Life really is too short so, yes, I'm picking my battles and trying to move on....obviously more difficult than it sounds, as I sat bolt upright in bed at 4 a.m. this morning, thinking about my kitchen. Here's another question for ya: the end portion of your backsplash that faces the window? Is that as glassy-polished as your countertop surface? See the end edge of the window, the piece on the left? All of the straight edges in my kitchen look just as dull. In this pic, you can see side by side the difference in glossiness....normal? Edited/Added: or, maybe, is this similar to wood and its end grain? And that the flat surface of the granite can be polished to glassy smoothness, but the end/edge surfaces, not so much? acid etch? glass tiles? (or is that marble?) either way, bad idea. Didn't her crew realize what would happen?

let me just say this about the tiling job,,,last pic, right corner. a good tiler will line up the design so that there is no break. A good tiler knows there is no way you're going to 'etch' the grout out of this mosaic. the only way to remove grout is with a hand tool or dremel and grind it out.

what did it look like before this debacle? why wasn't a sample tile grouted to see if you liked it? why wasn't the designer there on site and why did you have to go to the store to get new grout? where is project manager or GC on this job?

I just redid my neighbors bathroom. I was designer, project manager and GC along w/my tile guy, who is also a GC. we both collaborated before starting any task. tile layout, design, grout, color, etc. then we went to the customer and showed them exactly what it was going to look like. if they approved it, we did it. So I really don't get where your designer is coming off lecturing you.

Do not pay. If you material is damaged, then she and her crew are responsible for fixing it or replacing it. Period. I would not accept, nor pay for, any damaged, etched, scratched or otherwise blemished material that was caused by their doing.

you do not 'etch' grout to lighten it. never heard of such a thing. the damage was caused by her telling her crew to do that. I can't believe they did it. your tile guys are bozos.

She owes you new tile and a new install. (I'd hire someone else that knows how to install a difficult water jet mosaic. cuz the guys that did yours do not)
