Closing vents in old foundations

I've been looking at cottages in a town near me in FL. Most are from the 20s through WWII, post and beam with a slightly raised foundation. The foundations were all ventilated, of course. In this area the foundations are quite low compared to most of the southern US, so there's no easy access to anything that way.

Some of the houses I've looked at have had the vents closed up and stuccoed over. I know that in new construction you don't want a ventilated foundation anymore, but I'm wondering if there is any downside to doing this to an older house.
