Curb Appeal for a Post-War Fixer-Upper [UPDATED w/pics & question!]

This site & forum have provided heaps of inspiration for me as a first-time homeowner! I would really appreciate some personalized input on how to spruce up (not modernize) the exterior of my 1948 house.

Since this photo was taken I've removed the astroturf from the front steps, but the roof and siding (asbestos & artificial stone) are now wearing sorely with age. They both need to be redone, and of course the front lawn could use some landscaping.

Please share your thoughts on my ideas and offer up any of your own!

- grey siding and cheery turquoise door like this, keeping the bright white trim

- simple low-maintenance shrubbery along the front. (I'm no gardener — that sweet blue hydrangea bush by the deck is thriving with absolutely no help from yours truly!) Winterberry holly is native to my region and I think looks pretty year-round?

- classic red geraniums in window boxes (I'm not opposed to "cheating" with artificial flowers like this)

Thanks in advance!
