House Design 2.0 - On the way with ARG
Comments (18)CP, with Design 2.0 IF this moves forward, I will have MORE space than the original BIG garage. We KNOW going in that down the road, someone MIGHT demolish the house and build a big 2 story and then again they MIGHT NOT. It's an unknown. What we do KNOW now is that IF we do not go with Design 2.0, we will NOT be afforded the views we would like to have and that's a given. ZERO DOUBT. It is a gamble we are willing to take. IF we just said forget it and did Plan B and built in a fashion with NO views, we'd have a great house but no view. However, I would always be wondering "what IF" no one ever did a thing with the house and it remained a single story. With the current thought process, we know going in if this works we will have a view from day one. We also know that it IS possible that MAYBE someday we will not have the view. Going this route will give us a great house and worst case scenario would be NO view, that puts us right back to where we are now IF we went with Plan B - NO VIEW. Bpath, I do agree that hopefully the curb appeal will improve. As of now, the house is not on the market. The attorney for the estate has indicated there are NO plans to do anything with that house in regards to selling it. All in all and the absolute WORST possibility is that the house sells and it is leveled and the new owners build a BIG 2 story house, we get no view. In direct comparison IF we were to build with some modifications to the ORIGINAL plan to so it would be within our build budget, we are right back to square ONE from day ONE, NO VIEW at all. So either we build with changes and we KNOW there is NO VIEW or, we make some changes and get that VIEW knowing full well that MAYBE some day we get NO VIEW or, MAYBE NOT. I am willing to take that risk. I've spent time doing research and without going into a tremendous amount of detail, I feel this is the best option to obtain what we want. My opinion mind you. As far as Design 2.0, if this comes to fruition you'll see exactly what I am referring to once it's done....See MoreFeedback on our home design - by ARG
Comments (23)So it seems a common theme is that we should consider an extra bathroom. I'm trying to weigh both sides of this, and appreciate everyone's input so far. I grew up in a home with one bathroom (and three girls!) and we currently have two bathrooms. It sounds like many of you have had similar experiences, and it worked out fine (thanks for your input!). From this perspective, three bathrooms seems nice, and four seems almost extravagant. It's not the extra cost of installing a toilet and sink that is putting me off here. If I put an extra half bath in the basement, where would that go without upsetting my floor plan? Maybe I could steal some space from room 10 (HVAC/Utility), but that doesn't seem ideal. Another idea I had was to separate the toilet room and shower room in the kids bathroom. That way someone could be showering, someone could be using the toilet, and someone could be brushing their teeth all at the same time. We could maybe even put a second sink inside the toilet room if we can work that out. Do you think this would help eliminate some of the issues? As some of you mentioned, there are other toilets available if someone desperately "needs to go" and the bathroom is occupied. samarnn, I did think about the trek from outdoors to the half bath on the main level, and I really like the idea of a half bath in the mudroom, but I'm loathe to give up the space. There's no desk in the mudroom. I was planning a long bench with wall hooks, then a closet for the husbands gear and off-season coats, etc. I'm actually thinking about stealing the space in the lower right corner of the mudroom to make a pantry. We could use that space for a bathroom instead, but I'm worried about kitchen storage. My next step is to sit down and carefully go through the kitchen layout to make sure I have space for everything. Living in the middle of nowhere (slight exaggeration) it's nice to be able to stockpile groceries and supplies. I was also planning a hose bib on a concrete pad just outside the side garage door. That way if the kids get filthy in nice weather I can hose them off out there, before they bring the mess into the garage or mudroom. In colder weather, the mess should be on their clothes and footwear, which will stay in the mudroom. We're also planning a sink and some cabinets in the garage for washing up before coming inside, cleaning game, etc....See MoreOur future farmhouse - another ARG work
Comments (42)"but I think the chimney walked across to the other side of the roof... :)" Huhhh??? Oh geez! Well, just so everyone knows, in a 42 year career I've never had a mistake on a drawing, only discrepancies....."Hey ARG, we're out at the site and framing up the walls now and there appears to be a discrepancy in your window dimensions. Could you please turn to sheet A-3?......?" It sounds so much better that way. So we have a discrepancy in the rear elevation as it relates to the flue location.....again, just so everyone knows....See MoreDoug (ARG) designed our home
Comments (115)Hi Nanj, nice to meet you - small world indeed! Yes, we'd love to hear who you're working with, so please send me a message. I noticed in another comment you're from Indiana... I'm also a fellow Hoosier and grew up in South Bend and West Lafayette. Attached is a picture from the site. We will still have to remove a good amount of trees in the back to clear out the view, but there will be plenty of time for that. It's not the most breathtaking view, but we feel so lucky that we found anything like this for under 10k an acre... you've probably noticed that the market for land is absolutely on fire. We're really looking forward to starting the build, but I'll admit it's rather overwhelming. Oh, yeah, and last year when we were hunting for land, we had the same realization about our esteemed forum member, Mushcreek.
