I hate to be the one to break this to you, but a book shelf and a wine rack in nine inches isn't going to work. You have three sides (two outsides and one divider to separate the wine rack from the books. If you use 3/4" material - that's 2.25" of the width, leaving a total of 6.75". If the average wine bottle takes 4.75", there's two inches left for a shelf. If your cabinets are framed, you'll need 1.5" more at the edges to match the frame. Each side is typically 1.5" wide. You might be able to do something like a 6" wide shelf over two wine cubbies, but something tells me you werent' thinking that. Generally, a nine inch space becomes a tray cabinet or an open cabinet with a towel rack that pulls out, or apothecary drawers. With framed, you end up with a 6" wide cabinet for trays and cookie sheets on end. You could do a pair of side mounted rollout shelves if your existing cabinets have sides that can support one. If you guys are handy, you could do a 9" pullout like the one shown below. It has no sides and uses almost the entire nine inches in width and is supported mainly at the bottom. That one is kinda pricey, but you might be able to find it for less - or knock off the idea in a different way. And there are others that are not quite as much as this one. We have a center drain with an 18" trash and recycling setup underneath it. Initially thought we would need a side rear drain, but it worked! What makes it feasible is the lack of a disposal, so if you don't plan to have one, you might be able to pull it off. It really depends on whether you can fit all of the rest of your under-sink gear on one side of the sink (minus a bit in the middle for plumbing). We don't have any of those, so not sure how much space they take. If you're doing two half-depth bins side by side (on both sides of the sink) it might also be different--ours are two front-to-back so they take up 100% of the space on one side but nothing on the other.

I like the idea of U-shaped holders for vertical storage - was planning for that over the fridge but this would be handier. rosie/desertsteph's ideas would work for that. Why not a 15" drawer base? Well, all other base cabinets are drawers and I've pretty much figured out where everything will go already, so not sure I need yet another one. jakabedy reading about your experience and seeing your pictures was really helpful, esp the KA mixer. I was going to put mine across the kitchen in another cabinet but it would be so much more useful to have it available in this corner. Do you think the pull-out would hold a KA mixer and a Cuisinart? Or would that be too heavy? Thanks for the Hafele link, Angie - lots of interesting ideas from that manufacturer. As far as the filler goes, to the left is 1" filler to match the width of the corner cabinet's door, then another 2" to allow for the pullout to extend without hitting the corner cabinet's pulls. The 1" filler next to the range is based on experiences with my range (Electrolux) posted on the appliance forum. There's a bit of a bulb out to the front control panel and an inch filler on each side was highly recommended. Making the filler one or two inches narrower doesn't really help because the next bigger cabinet size would be an 18-inch one, and there's definitely not enough space for that. I'm off to Ikea to get the base cabinet and look at the drawer and vertical storage options. Thanks again everyone.

If this means that there is a cabinet in the island that is only 10" deep now and you are planning to store things like extra glasses, vases and pitchers it will be fine, however if you have any thoughts of putting any extra dishes in there, you might want to add the 2" there. I would rather increase the cabinets if I felt that I had enough room for seating already, which I think you do. Just my vote.
