What would you do with an extra 15-inch base cabinet?
Due to some reconfiguration in my kitchen plan, I now have a place for a 15-inch base cabinet where there was originally going to be a 6-inch one. It's squeezed between a corner cabinet and a range, with 2 inches of filler on one side and an inch on the other.
I was going to use something like this in the original 6-inch space:
Constraints are:
- Ikea frameless cabinet
- must allow for a single door to be mounted
I already have a 15-inch trash pullout so don't need another one. I'm not a big fan of the Ikea pull-out storage drawer option because it seems like I'd either have to lean over the door top or step to the side to get into the 2 top drawers. Anyone have any experience with it?
The Rev-a-shelf pullouts I've seen for 15-inch cabinets are for framed cabinets only - I haven't seen one that size for frameless.
A pullout for trays would be great.
All the other base cabinets in my plan are drawers.
All ideas welcome!

Comments (3)I hate to be the one to break this to you, but a book shelf and a wine rack in nine inches isn't going to work. You have three sides (two outsides and one divider to separate the wine rack from the books. If you use 3/4" material - that's 2.25" of the width, leaving a total of 6.75". If the average wine bottle takes 4.75", there's two inches left for a shelf. If your cabinets are framed, you'll need 1.5" more at the edges to match the frame. Each side is typically 1.5" wide. You might be able to do something like a 6" wide shelf over two wine cubbies, but something tells me you werent' thinking that. Generally, a nine inch space becomes a tray cabinet or an open cabinet with a towel rack that pulls out, or apothecary drawers. With framed, you end up with a 6" wide cabinet for trays and cookie sheets on end. You could do a pair of side mounted rollout shelves if your existing cabinets have sides that can support one. If you guys are handy, you could do a 9" pullout like the one shown below. It has no sides and uses almost the entire nine inches in width and is supported mainly at the bottom. That one is kinda pricey, but you might be able to find it for less - or knock off the idea in a different way. And there are others that are not quite as much as this one. Comments (8)If you are the primary cook, the counter height should be set for you. You should determine your ideal counter height, there are threads here on that. Including the correct sink depth. Then have the cabinets designed and sink chosen accordingly. As live-wire says, a thick butcher block cutting board on feet will add 2'' of height for the occasional cook. If you do decide to lift the counters, don't forget: - You will need to raise the upper cabinets, or lose vertical clearance between the counter and the upper cabinet. Less clearance may affect which countertop appliances can be placed where. - You will also probably want to raise the range, if you are using one. Ideally the top of the burner grates is at the same height as the adjacent counter, so that a heavy pot can be moved from counter to burner with minimal lifting. You'll also want to raise the hood, or lose clearance there too. - Are there any spots where the counter goes under a windowsill? Will there be enough clearance, how will the back splash be affected, will it look right? - It is an opportunity for taller cabinet carcasses, thus deeper drawers or more drawers, maybe locating trash under the sink, etc. Personally, I think 1.5'' of filler molding between the granite slab and the top drawer would look odd, like a bodge. Comments (19)Interesting discussion & very useful. I redid my kitchen 20 years ago & am now in the process again - hopefully wiser. Here are my thoughts. Things I got last time that I really like sink tilt-out tray tray dividers over fridge - I'm short, so it makes this high space more usable. Use it to store cookie sheets, cutting boards, muffin tins and trays large drawers for pots and pans - as everyone seems to agree, these are much more convenient than standard shelves Things I got last time that I wish I hadn't spice rack inside cabinet door - I have a small kitchen, so this seemed like a great space saver. However, the weight of the rack and spices meant the latches on that door were always breaking. I finally removed the door & left the cabinet as open shelves. Pullout cutting board - the problem is that you couldn't cut on it by pulling it out partway, it had to be completely removed from its slot. Then it had to be carefully replaced after cleaning. Just too much trouble. What I'm getting this time sink tilt-out tray tray dividers over fridge even more drawers for pots and pans pull out containers for trash & recycle different kind of lazy susan in the corner - have one now, which is useful, but stuff falls off the turntable and is lost in the back. Comments (19)The left is mounted on the side panel and the right is mounted on a special piece that IKEA sold for this application. Don't know if they still sell it, but I'm sure it could be reproduced. The center piece is basically a 1 1/2" piece of MDF that extends the depth of the cab and is secured at the back and front to the bottom of the cab. It functions as a short cab wall and I have a drawer rail mounted on both sides. In your case you could position in where you need to achieve your right wall. 11 years agoI have two of the IKEA 15" full-height pull-outs. In the 2+ years my kitchen has been finished, I haven't found using them to be awkward at all. But mine are also at/near the end of an island, so there is clear, easy access from both sides. I find that if I'm wanting to access what's on the bottom, I don't stand in front of them to open them, then move to the side. I simply start on the side. So there aren't any extra motions. If I'm wanting what's in the upper drawers, I might face the cabinet head-on (not really sure) but there is no problem "reaching in" to get what I need. Remember the drawers are full extension, so it's really no different than a traditional drawer. I think the only difference would be if your inner drawers were particularly low.
One cabinet holds the cat food bin on the lower drawer and pet items on the inner drawers, and I use it about every other day. The other drawer holds the stand mixer on the bottom and odd things like tortillas and potatoes in the top (was originally trivets, but I moved things around), so again not used every day.
Another bonus use is that they fit my husbands bulky lunch box, so it doesn't sit on my counter all night. But that means that my husband would have to put it in the cabinet, so it doesn't really ever get to serve its purpose . . .
I had originally planned on using just one of these units (for the KA mixer that wouldn't fit anywhere else), but had extra room and opted for a second one rather than a traditional cabinet or a 4- or 3-drawer base. I like them.
