We’re looking for ideas...do you like a challenge?

Our whole backyard and especially this area behind our house has been in need of some love since we moved in. It was farther down on our priority list until we discovered that during storms, the downspout is backing up creating a huge water problem next to the foundation and it’s also causing some ice damns in the winter. Not good!!!

We will have to dig up the walk way to rebury it. It’s in poor shape anyways, so we’re totally fine with that and we’ve decided to hire a landscaper to do it. The problem is, we want to spruce up the area with a simple, budget friendly design. We were thinking of having a path installed instead of a small walk way. Maybe it could lead to our shed and/or deck? And we’re not sure if we should just leave it as grass or have beds next to the foundation. The area between the garage is shade and the surrounding area only gets morning light. The other challenge is that we use a snow blower to make paths in the snow for our dog, so a path with small rock is not condusive.

I don’t come to this part of Gardenweb often, but have lived in the Home side for years and am hoping you all can share your knowledge a bit. Our goal is to come up with a good example of what we have in mind before we hire out. Any thoughts? Products? Plants? Design? Thank you in advance!

This a view of the area and walk way that needs work

Walk way between garage & shed gets very little sun.

Back of house, the bed goes up to the covered generator. Both the a/c & generator have to stay where they are.
