Thin Slivers and Rows of Skinny Pieces

I’m a homeowner in the middle of a large and expensive pool house project. The builder hired a tile professional to lay 12” x 24” tile in multiple areas. The tile guy is about finished, and I walked through the project this evening. As you can see in the pictures, there are super thin sliver pieces near where you enter the tiled area. And for each of the separately tiled rooms, there is a row of skinny (but bigger than slivers) tile going from the entrance all the way to the the end. It looks really bad and like bush league work. It also took them a month for what I was told would take a week, which made me wonder if they knew what they were doing. For you tile professionals out there, I assume these are things that should have been avoided with proper planning at the beginning?
