Found Crown Gall on Cherry Tree
Comments (4)I've got galls by the hundreds mostly on Citation rootstock. Have for many years. So far it has had no effect on the trees or crop that I can tell. I am moving to other roots and replanting in the same places. There isn't much else I can do since it's in my greenhouse. I'm not too worried since the fruit continues to be great....See MoreIs this crown gall?
Comments (24)Galltrol and Galltrex were designed to be dips to be used on roots before planting. They are bacteria that are supposed to colonize the roots and to keep Agrobacterium tubefaciens out of the plant. When a plant has had the galls develop, the amount of A. tumefaciens in that soil increases because of the material produced by the gall. There are a huge number of scientific papers out on crown gall now, because it is a serious problem. Rose rootstocks were searched for rootstock that was less susceptible to crown gall. There was no one good answer. One interesting paper talks about injuring rose stems and innoculating them with tumefaciens; it reported that damaged areas closest to the soil were more prone to gall development than areas out on stems. Marti, R et al. 1999 "Evidence of migration and endophytic presence of A. tumefaciens in rose plants" European Journal of Plant Pathology 105:39-50 reports among many other things "systemic and latent infections in rose." And the spiny galls that bettym asks about are insect caused. If the insects aren't removed, the rose will have more galls year after year until the rose is severely damaged. The insects have preferences for certain roses, but as more people look at their roses, we see that the insects are settling for roses not thought to be their first choice....See MoreCrown Gall - What to do?
Comments (3)I do surgery on the infected plant. I remove it from the soil and wash all the soil off the roots. I place it on a newspaper and carefully remove the gall. Using an Exacto knife I carefully cut away the area where the gall was attached, until I get to clean uninfected wood..I then put antibacteria ointment on the wound. The cheap stuff from Wal-Mart. I mix a cup of bleach in 5 gallons of water, drench the soil where the rose was planted, then replant the bush treating it as a bare root. Every rose I've treated this way has recovered and grown nicely. Crown Gall is from a bacteria in the soil so it made sense to me to treat it as a bacteria infection. Don't know if anyone else has done this but it works for me and I've never lost a bush to Crown Gall as a result. Great care must be taken to avoid nicking the bush anywhere close to the ground. Crown gall can enter through a pruner nick, or an insect bite or even a scrape in the bark. I wrap up the gall removed from the plant and destroy it....See Morecrowning/ pruning orange trees, what to do next
Comments (3)Your father should have left the tree alone. Dooryard citrus need not be pruned at all. Exceptions: aesthetic purposes, to remove cold-damaged limbs, and to rejuvenate OLD TREES with reduced vigor. - Millet...See MoreBenT (NorCal 9B Sunset 14)
