Change in flooring will cause gap - what to do?

A friend of mine lives in a townhouse on a slab. The engineered hardwood planks over a padding were water damaged. She wants to switch to Luxury Vinyl Tile, but there there would be a height difference, since the engineered hardwood sat higher.

She would very much prefer not to have to remove and reset the baseboard. Could she replace the quarter round with a base shoe that sits taller? Do they make tall base shoe?

And then what happens at the door frames? How do you fill in the gap? The installer mentioned caulking it, but that sounds, um, amateurish? I don't have the specific measurements for how much gap we are talking, but the photos might help. The board on the right in both photos is the LVT she has picked out.

Remove quarter round and install it tight to floor. Install wooden threshold at door with a rabbit to allow for expansion for LVP.

Sometimes the stock of a certain variety goes down hill after a number of years & "goes to center". Sometimes even a good reliable older dahlia will revert to it's origins & go to center. Nothing that you can do about it but toss it out & get another next year.

Also, we used Polyblend's "Charcoal" for the grout on the porcelain tile floor. There doesn't seem to be a Charcoal color for the caulk. What's a good substitute? A different brand? Thanks!

We are not interested in horizontal cabling or wide spaced vertical cables because like others have said, they can be climbed or squeezed through as well. Also not trying to go 100% mid-century modern, more “warm modern” inspired by mid-century modern style. Printesa’s picture is pretty much the vibe I was looking for in this space. Thank you for that inspiring pic. Vertical metal railing, wood, white walls. I like the wood planks extended to the ceiling on the right but not for the existing banister space. Maybe knock out the wall on that side of my steps into the living room! Thanks everyone -B

You could go to a hardware store and get a 2x4 sheet of good 1/4" plywood that is smooth on both sides to test with. Once the floor is clean lay the 1/4" down and then a piece of flooring on top of it. Then get your measurements. Judging by the photos a 1/4" would bring the flooring up to level or near level with the other and the door frame gap would be greatly reduced. Then you can look for the best transition piece for the doorway to minimize a tripping hazard.

I put down 1/4" sheeting and gorilla tape the seams on 90% of concrete floors before installing any flooring. It gives a good clean, smooth surface to work with and any glues that may be used bonds much better to it than on bare concrete.

I agree.. Remove the quarter round and once the floor is finished reinstall it (or better yet, buy new) and place it tight against the flooring and base board..
