20 amp generator but 30 amp inlet box
Comments (18)Hi, Following up on Ron's answer above. I have the same question. My 20+ year old Generac transfer switch input panel has a 20 amp 120/240 connector it feeds 6 -15 amp circuits. My new generator has a 30 amp output. Are you saying that I can change the connecter on the cord going into the the transfer switch and "feed" 30 amps from the generator to the panel? If I understand you correctly it should all work fine as long as the load from the house does not exceed 20 amps? Is that the case or is there something in the transfer that will trip if the input exceeds 20 amps? Any other concerns?...See MoreWiring dishwasher & disposal 12/3 wire
Comments (4)Brickeyee is right thats how my last house was wired, dw and gd on a 20 amp together but mine were not cord plugged. putting both on separate breakers is overkill but can do no harm. if you were using 12/3 and two breakers the neutral is shared by both circuits. normally neutral is not connected to a single pole switch which would control the GD it will continue on to the recptical. since you are going to be splitting it so half is switched the neutral is shared and has to connect to both halves. I think you could just not break the tab on the side your white wires connect. the black will go to the switch and then to the GD's outlet (top gold screw with separation tab broken off on the hot side) The red wire would go to be in to the switch's box in the wall and just be spliced to the same going out to the bottom outlet's gold screw for the DW. red would not be connected to the switch it would just be spliced with wire nuts and placed behind the switch in the box. be sure you ground everything as required....See MoreWill a 40 amp breaker work? baseboard heaters
Comments (3)All the wire used in a circuit must be sized for the protective device. So, no, you can't connect two #12 cables to a 40a breaker. Not even if you're sure the loads are appropriate. Not code compliant, not safe. If I'm not mistaken, a permanently installed heater is considered a sustained load, so is subject to the 80% load rule. Thus a 20a 240v circuit can supply up to 3840w worth of heaters and a 30a 240v circuit up to 5760w. First, make sure your service has enough capacity to handle the additional load. No point in proceeding if you're just going to trip the main on some subzero winter night. If that's up to snuff, to power your heaters, I'd probably install a 100a main lugs subpanel. Feed the sub from a 100a breaker in your main's last remaining double pole slot. Then run your heaters from breakers in the sub. It sounds like two 30a circuits (with #10 wire) would do it. If some of this is confusing, I suggest you get a copy of Wiring Simplified and study up before proceeding. Or just call a pro, as Bus suggested....See MoreAny 36” electrical cooktops that are ok with a 30 amp breaker?
Comments (42)So what was the outcome of all this? What kind of company did you hire to dig under the tiles to switch out the lines? We are having a similar issue... have a 36" gas cooktop on an island, had a gas leak and it wound up being under the island. We have quotes for getting the gas line redone, as well as for changing the amperage to be able to handle a 36" induction cooktop, but nobody seems to want to do the excavation part, or know anyone who would. I'd really like to know how much that's going to be, as we like the thought of getting rid of the gas line. Sorry to add on to the thread, I'll start another one if need be, but I'm hoping Kuyaariel will reply......See MoreRon Natalie
