I don't understand the obsession with knockout roses
Comments (62)I planted a KO Double Pink at the mailbox about 2-3 years ago, expecting it to grow big and become this summer workhorse everyone gushes about. Not even close. My experience so far has been underwhelming. First, who says they are disease free? Here in the South, mine got BS worse than most others I have. Second, it is not growing. It blooms, it does nicely in the Spring, it looks good while the bloom is young but has dubious bloom aging and the repeat is questionable. The mystery for me is why the bush overall stays very small, despite careful fertilizing and all that. It has barely grown at all since I got it at the nursery and these are supposed to get to 5 ft high. I can only suspect it gets too much root competition from the boxwoods planted very close to it, especially the one in the middle. All in all, nothing to write home about. What do people think of the newer coral KOs? They seem to have something much more elegant about them than the red and the pink. I love the pink's early strong, fresh color but the aging bloom becomes both washed out and garish. So it's a major meh so far and it has had enough time to provide itself....See MoreHighwire Flyer Rose

Comments (21)The Rose Glutton had to go back to the trough again today.......I brought home 7 more - for total price of $45 and change! In big pots, healthy! I will post photos tomorrow, got home after dark. Some roses they just had one of. I got the Montezuma - love the color, saw one in a friend's garden. I got 2 White Meillands for 2 large pots, another Polka, a Cl. Crimson Sky, Passionate Kisses and Cherry Frost. It was hard to pass up Heirloom, but I have one. There was Easter Basket, but am not too impressed with it. There was one of each of Laguna, Summer Romance, Brandy, Sun Flare. Lots of Fruity Petals, which I really like, and Ruby Meilland, a small flowered red. May have to go get another. If they were $10-15, that would be another matter, but $5.97? How can I not??? Lowe's got some in but the only one I was interested in was Soul Sister and I have one of those. Dont know what Home Depot has, but the one in my town doesnt seem to be into roses - body bags and Knockouts. But Wally really hit a home run this time!...See MoreAre you ready for a miniature Knock Out?
Comments (164)I tried one Knock Out rose once ( I think it was the blush one) and I was astonished. In my garden in Northern CA, with mild wet winters and sunny, dry summers, with not much BS "pressure", it got mildew and BS. I do not spray, so I waited several years to see if it would "grow out of it". No luck, so I eventually had to shovel prune it, which I almost never do. I have over 150 roses of several different types, mostly older, which are happy here. I was so surprised that the KO rose, which of course was rather blah looking, did not even do what it was advertised to do - stay healthy! I presume that they do stay healthy somewhere, perhaps where they were developed, but not here. Again a problem of a rose which does well in one place being universally advertised as doing great everywhere. An old, old, story. Jackie...See MoreLilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca
