Neighbor's thistles: This is too much!
Comments (4)Try a long butcher knife on the plants as you see them. Put blade next to root and twist. With practice you can pop the plant out in one piece. You must do this before the tap root becomes too long. Many thistles are biennial and come up one year then flower the next. Depending on the type, you probably should look at his bed first, thistles form a rosette of leaves. This is a great stress reliever when tension gets the better of you. Think of the thistle as your problem and attack....See Moremy tv is not too loud, neighbor says it is
Comments (21)I think that with people like your neighbour you really have to put your foot down. You do what you can practically do (not using ear phones) and then you tell them that you have made some changes and that is all you can do. If you continue to appease a him he will continue to make demands and wants to rule the building. Perhaps you are an easy target. I moved into a place and after 20 years of apartment living and never having a neighbour complain about my noise, my new downstairs neighbours started complaining about my noise. That was that my tv was too loud and they could hear it in their lounge under mine and in their bedroom. The night the wife came up to complain I had the volume on 4 when 2 is silent. I couldn't hear it in the next room of my own apartment. I moved the tv away from the wall and then next day told them what I had done. However, I then added - I have done all i can do. My television is not at an unreasonable volume and I have to be able to live in my home. If it continues to be a problem then you may have to contact the body corporate (as they own their apartment) and the owners of my apartment (as I rent which i think also explains their power feeling) and organise to have the sound proofing improved in the floors (which are floor boards with carpet). Other than that I do not think an indepenent body would think the volume of my tv was unreasonable. I really got the idea that these people were going to keep coming up with things if I didn't put my foot down. They did it all in a very nice way - but this is often passive aggressive behaviour to get their own way. So don't get pushed around. Ps they haven't complained since. But I also doubt they want to fork out money to fix the sound proofing. The only thing now is that I notice their sound more - one being the sound of the husband talking on the phone and they both irritate the hell out of me now. Oh yes prior to this complaint they complained about my son's basket ball hoop in the common garden area and their cat bullies my cat all the time and attacked me when I tried to stop it coming in to my home after my cat so I had to get a tetnus shot and go on antibiotics. When I origanally told them about what had happened with their cat their was no offer to pay my medical bills. So I am glad that I then set them straight and made it clear that I was not going to put up with their constant nit picking. They have been super nice since but I now don't want a bar of them. Well good luck and stand up for yourself....See MoreMy external wall mounted fan is too loud for the neighbor!
Comments (7)Sounds like you need to cook for your neighbor every once in a while. :) How far from the property line is your exhaust point? putting the blower in the attic, even if it's on the same side of your house might help since the wall will help with sound isolation. Also, in the attic, you can put up further sound isolation between the blower and your neighbor in the form of foam or other materials that absorb sound. Get yourself an SPL meter. They use to have analog SPL meters at Radio Shack for about $50. Turn your fan on full blast and check the level at the property line. You might be able to achieve a compliant sound level with some vibration dampers (rubber gaskets/washers between the wall and blower) or a sound barrier around the existing blower. This all depends on what frequency the offending sound is at and whether it's motor noise or air movement noise. If it's motor vibration noise, it could be causing your walls to resonate the sound and direct it all towards your neighbor. Rubber standoffs might help to stop that and certainly attic mount even if it's just inside the attic might help. One idea is try finding the largest disposable styrofoam ice chest you can. Hopefully, it will be big enough to surround the wall mounted blower. Then cut out or punch holes on the side where the blower blows. See if there's any significant drop in sound level. If money is no object, then find the blower with the biggest duct diameter you can but does *not* have a super high cfm rating. Larger blowers/fans can move the same mount of air with less velocity which means quieter. That means a 600cfm blower made to fit 8 or 10" ducts might be quieter than a 450cfm blower made for 6" ducts. This is actually why running a 1200cfm blower at half speed is usually quieter than average 600cfm blowers at full speed. It does however, require you to replace your ducts in order to have the best results. Good luck....See MoreHow to tell 2 nice neighbors....we're selling....please read.
Comments (20)We moved from a VERY small community of about 100 in December. We weren't looking either, but a realtor friend that knew our tastes called with "the perfect house" - we looked, we bought. We planned to break the news to everyone when we put the house on the market figuring it would take a few months to sell & we'd still be in & out while we worked on the new house. However, we sold it to the first person we told (not neighbors) & they wanted to close on December 15 - we had 2 weeks to prep the new, fix the old, move, etc. & we were keeping such odd hours that we never ran into anyone to tell them. All of them were nice, great neighbors, but we didn't "hang out" with any of them. They are probably mad at us or feel offended that we "up & left" but it was unavoidable. We never dreamed it would happen so fast!...See More- 8 years ago
