Looks like a wild sumac to me, Rhus typhina

Pretty sure it's sumac and NOT Allanthus. Try this test to confirm.

Take a leaflet and crush it with your fingers. If it smells like peanut butter, then it's Ailanthus.

Looking closely at the seeds (not easy to see in the pic), it is indeed ailanthus.

I'm seeing keys ie seeds. So it's not a sumac. I think I can also see the little protruding thumb on the base of the leaflets. I'm going to say Ailanthus. Unless the OP comes back and says the foliage is opposite.

These are not my pics or trees. Just trying to help put. I say Ailanthus also because of the seeds, but the original OP said the leaves just smell like leaves.

Here is a closer look at the seeds.

Twigs, leaves and fruits = Ailanthus. If the agent was shown only the fruits that might be why they said ash.

No terminal leaflet and a terminal inflorescence so likely Ailanthus. If the foliage is opposite, not alternate, it's still not an Ash.

Again, Ailanthus leaves have a distinct PEANUT aroma. In NJ/Zone 7, Ailanthus is almost the state tree (at least roadside!) and this "exotic" has become quite naturalized and ubiquitous. Crush a leaf, if it smells like peanut, it's Ailanthus.

But that pic does not look like Ailanthus to me.
