Compressor/Condensor --KLUNK-- sound
Comments (8)some of the older single phase scroll compressors made a knocking sound when they shut down. the cause of the noise was the system pressures equalizing really quick upon shutdown causing the scroll blades to rotate backwards for a second. if youve ever heard a 3 phase scroll running backwards youd know what i mean, your neighbor would hear your unit loud and clear. I was at a seminar where a copeland rep told us that although this didnt cause any damage they have since added a check valve to prevent the reverse rotation because of all the complaints they got. pretty sure only the reciprocating compressors are mounted in the way mr havac is refering to. if you have a recip what hes saying makes sense. it would be the compressor motor knocking against the inside of the shell. there isnt anything you can do about that. a scroll will more than likely be around 6 inches in diameter, perfectly round, cylindrical shaped. a recip will be short and oval shaped. i dont work on much of trane's residential stuff but i know their commercial scrolls are kinda potbelly shaped and orange/reddish colored. ive also seen grossly overcharged systems hammer really bad trying to compress liquid refrigerant. probably not the case with your system. I would have your tech clean the coils and check the charge using the subcooling or superheat method (whichever is needed for your system) if he doesnt know which method is needed, call another tech. if everything checks out chargewise and its not flooding liquid id let it run til it dies or youll be chasing phantom problems forever and making your tech rich. :)...See MoreOut of curiousity, what happens when AC compressor runs w/o fan?
Comments (2)Update: After running for 8 days w/o the condenser fan, I hear it no more, so I think the compressor finally locked up. It was sounding really ragged near the end, kinda like a small engine running with no oil. Whereas I would never intentionally destroy anyone else's property, having that old earsore of an air conditioner finally bite the dust through someone else's negligence isn't going to make me shed any tears. In any case, there was a huge yellowjacket's nest inside that electrical disconnect box, and I wasn't going anywhere near it, I'm allergic to wasps. Comments (13)While the idea is logical for lighting, it seems overly complicated for A/C and would do little but reduce the life of your A/C unit. Every time someone opened a door the AC would shut off, then as soon as the door closed a few seconds later it would come back on again. Cycling on and off repeatedly is not good for your A/C compressor, or any electric motor for that matter. Just do it the old fashioned way and make sure windows and doors are closed before firing up the A/C, and make sure people know not to open windows when it's on....See MoreA/c blows harder before shut off
Comments (8)You may have a 2-stage AC condenser and multi-speed or variable speed blower where the staging is controlled by the furnace control board and not the thermostat. In this set up the AC starts off in the low stage and runs for a set period of time. If the room temperature has not reached the thermostat setting by the end of the time period, the control will move the AC into the high stage. Running in the 2nd stage may only take a few minutes for the room to reach the thermostat setting temperature and then shut down. This is normal behavior when the the control board does the staging, but it is not ideal. For best efficiency and comfort the thermostat should control the staging and not the control board....See Moresktn77a
