Comments (9)Scott, While I've got your attention on this thread, can I ask you a question about Gold Dust? You've recommended it as a superb early dessert peach. I wanted to ask you about coloring. Does it seem to color well for you? The pictures I've seen on the Arboreum show good color, but obviously they are going to photo their best samples. I know color isn't an important aspect for you (or any other backyard grower) but I'm finding it's pretty important for me. This season is the first season I've been selling at roadside and a farmer's market. Last week I was selling some Georgia Belles at roadside. They are so poorly colored, many people would drive by slowly look at the peaches and then move on. One car actually stopped, looked at the peaches and drove off. This is the first time this has happened. These peaches had no blemishes, but they're still ugly. I ended up selling most of the Georgia Belles, but mostly to people that had bought peaches from me before. A peach grower told me that people initially buy based on appearance, but come back based on flavor. I'm finding this is true. So from now on, I'm going to have to stick with peaches that have a good appearance, as well as good flavor....See MoreNon-rolled cookies that taste like animal crackers?
Comments (9)Just what i was about to suggest. Especially letting them rest in the fridge at least a couple hours. But is it not the cute shapes that give that special flavor? ; ) Most cookie/crackers need the edges and the poke in the middle to give the baked crisp. The nook and cranny theory. The poke to keep from puffing too much. When i see a coarse grain or oat in a copy-cat recipe i like to give it a run in the spice grinder. I also remember lemon. My nieces are 21 and 24 so it was probably 12 yrs ago when we made copy-cats. (they have not visited this home at the same time) so at least 10yrs ago Lemon animals, chocolate(probably carob)animals, graham crackers, and the favorite, cheez-its. I only have the tiny tin of leaves cutters and when that got tedious we rolled, chilled and sliced, then pressed a bit like a thumb-print. We also made an oreo type cookie for ice-cream sandwiches. Not in my pepperplate/computer but i do have them at home in my handwritten book... I'll look tonight. I'm curious what recipe i used. I'm guessing lemon and vanilla, maybe nutmeg. It seems 90% of the FDA recall list are undeclared dairy and nuts. Factories that process multiple snacks back to back tend to contaminate each other....See MoreMy new favorite crackers.
Comments (16)sushipup, I'm with you about the 1000 layer crackers from TJ's. In fact, you may have been the one that put me on to them. Someone from here did. The saving grace for me is that they come individually wrapped. Makes me more conscious of how many I'm eating...LOL. I try to keep a box on hand in case company drops by. Everyone I've served them to, so far, loves them....See MoreServing crackers at the dinner table
Comments (46)For goodness sake, if you want crackers, put them on the table and just get on with enjoying your dinner and the fact that you are enjoying it with others, if that is what you are planning on doing. Life is much too short and too serious to worry about the lack of formality associated with crackers. Just enjoy. No one is going to talk about you behind your back because of it. If it concerns you still, buy some more fancy crackers rather than just saltines. Put them in a fancy bowl and just get on the enjoyment of eating and sharing. Over these last few years, before Covid, I have encountered so many buffet tables at events where there was not even bread or crackers to have with the other tidbits. So many people have declared that they eat no gluten. I got to where I would either bring the bread for the table or bring my own small stash of crackers or bread. Bread has taken a bad rap over the last few years. It is my opinion that much of that is not really warranted. Who wants to eat hunks of cheese all by itself? Not I. Just don't crush the crackers into the bowls before serving. Surely not. Breaking bread or crackers into your bowl is a personal thing to be customized....See More- 5 years agolast modified: 5 years ago
