painting my pink brick house

been in my house 21 years and I am about to replace the windows with vinyl. And paint the outside. I just ordered a iron double door with all the scroll work on it for the front. I really love all the houses with the real dark trims and the Richer looks. I was thinking about taking my house in that direction?? the vinyl windows selection I can go a real dark brown and then they have some lighter taupes. I was thinking of going real dark brown and painting the top trims dark brown. SW black fox. and going with SW virtual taupe for the stucco. And adding SW shiitake around the trim on the dark windows and possibly some at the top of the house for some trim ?? am I wrong for taking this pink brick house so dark??

Ok good... I thought that’s what you meant. I think a dark brown would look very nice!

Don’t ruin that house with a remuddle. It already has enough of an identity crisis, and one more fad isn’t going to sort that out. It will only make it worse, with peeling paint and warping plastic. Don’t do a cheap ugly makeover. It will look cheap and ugly.

As others have said, there are simply too many, disparate forms, shapes, colors, textures, details, and tomfoolery! The best strategy, IMO, is to look for ways to unite and blend together as many of these unrelated objects as possible. Reduce the amount of contrast, don't increase it. Less is truly more. More is a bore!

I think it will look beautiful in a creamy white. I’d do charcoal (BM Charcoal Slate or FB Downpipe) garage doors u less you can replace and then 100% they should be a warm medium wood. I’d replace that section of diff materials in The garage gable with natural shakes and replace All the ornamental stuff with beams. Then do your landscaping like an English garden. It will be so gorgeous.

Yours is one of the better looking and nicely designed exteriors that I've seen on Houzz. I like the composition, scale and proportion. If you want to keep shutters on your home I would suggest replacing what you have with appropriately sized operable shutters. It's a bit hard to see in the photo but if your door and sidelights have 80's decorative glass I might consider replacing to update the look. You might even consider replacing the door and sidelights with double entry doors. I would suggest looking at your landscaping - especially thinning out some of the shrubs in front of the porch. Just to say again - you have a lovely home!

I learned this on a quilting Forum LOL: Color is secondary to value, which is the lightness or darkness of color. Easiest way I have found to check value is to look at the house through your camera viewfinder, on the black and white setting. Colors of the same value will look the same color! Colors that look very light and very dark give the most contrast. Your trim today is the same value as your brick, so neither color shows off the other one. You could go dark or very light. Since the brick is a cool tone, I think your idea of taupe and creamy or cool Browns is good, but if you wanted to paint everything on that house, except brick, a nice chalk white, it would be equally beautiful. Have fun!

Dont paint the brick. You are already maintenance free, why would you want to have to repaint every now and then and on a house that large too. Also, brick needs to breathe. When it is painted, it cant breathe, and the bubbling starts (look at picture Sophie posted above). I have a house on the corner from me, with painted brick, one whole side looks like that picture. Your house is very attractive the way it looks right now. Your landscaping looks nice too. I will admit, your trim wouldnt be a color I would ever have picked, but, it doesnt look bad.

oh my godness I guess I didn't make my self clear, I am only looking to paint the trims and stucco!! No I am not painting the brick. And picking a vinyl window color.

What I am trying to do with it is paint the trims and stucco darker, put in dark vinyl windows and a dark door.

If you're thinking brown, my suggestion would be to try it out on just a small area and live with it for a month or two. (Because I had a pink brick house with brown trim and never liked the combination.).

And I don't think brown trim is going to look good with the charcoal gray roof on your house. I think going light, as Sylvia suggested, a light vanilla off white with no yellow would be the best look.

Unless someone started making mid-to-high-level vinyl windows that I’m not aware of, I would not use them on a house such as yours; they’re too low-end and will cheapen the overall look of your home. Have you looked at other window cladding materials, such as fiberglass (like Marvin Integrity) or aluminum (like Marvin Ultimate)?

What kind of windows do you have that are failing after only 21 years? That seems like an absurdly short lifetime.

I too would go with something better than vinyl for that house.

Yes I have several window in the front that are just rotting out on the edges. What is wrong with vinyl window? They look just like any other window.

Vinyl is pretty much garbage on the low end. If you pay for something worth buying in a premium vinyl, then you could have gotten fiberglass. Don’t expect a &200 window to be anything but a $200 window that lasts you 7-10 years and then reboot.
