Would like to plant Oriental & Stargazer Lilies
Comments (8)I, too, bought Stargazers at the super market at 50% off after last Easter. I planted them in the garden after they bloomed but had to dig them up when I had to have work done on the irrigation system. They're now back in pots and acting like it's spring. And we have some cold weather coming. Here in Jacksonville, it CAN get cold enough for lillies, but it can also be too warm or cold at all the wrong times. To date, most of the bulbs of any kind that I've planted have grown like crazy but very few have bloomed. This could be a fertilizer/food problem and I'm open to suggestions. But finding room in the 'fridge for bulbs at my house would be a major accomplishment! cora...See MoreHow deep to plant Stargazer lily bulbs?
Comments (14)Hi Linnea56 Since they were transplanted only a couple weeks ago they haven't had much time to establish so I'd go ahead and move them now. Just be careful when digging to not break off the stem that may be beginning to emerge from the bulb underground and try to disturb the roots as little as possible. The soil should still be pretty soft around them so it shouldn't be too difficult to dig them up gently. But honestly, one of the great things about lilies is that they're not "fussy" plants. If you'd prefer to set them deeper in the Fall, (assuming a new "jungle" hasn't grown up by then), they would grow fine this season. Deeper is just more ideal. -Helen...See MoreLook at the difference in freckles on these Stargazer Lilies
Comments (7)I think I prefer the first one, too. I'm glad they are separated in different areas by about 15 feet, but I do tend to break off all the seed pods when they're done, missed a few last year. The little neighbor girl asked if she could have some of the first ones, so I'll try to do something about that. The first ones are making a spectacular display this year, but I think they need to be divided this fall and replanted further apart, but it takes at least 3 years for them to produce the most blooms en masse. I'm kind of dreading that and don't know if I should leave them alone and put compost down for one more year or what. I'd use a fork but still am afraid of ruining some bulbs or set them back. I know even the individual scales will grow, but it takes a lot longer. Thank you for responding....See MoreMy Stargazer Lilies
Comments (30)Pam, I planted everything you see in the gardens, but confess to hiring a woman to weed for 4 hours a week. I planted too many gardens and am only here 3.5 days a week. DH just said I have over 5,000 sq feet planted. I do love to dig, mulch, and plant. Weeding? not so much! DH doesn't garden. He shakes his head, but admires my work. I hired the garden lady in spring 2000 when DD's wedding was coming up and I didn't want to walk her down the aisle with black fly bites all over me. LOL. Now, with all the babies, I had even less time than before. I have sworn off adding any new gardens. I only divide, shift, and amend them now, or add a new plant, tree, or shrub. We lost a linden tree last week that I planted in 1994. I may replace it....See MoreDiane (NC zone 8a)
