My ex-roommate used to grow those here, but he dug up the bulbs and took them with him when he left. I don't blame him because he had bought a bunch of expensive bulbs. The Oriental lilies had the best fragrance.

Do you cut them and take them inside? They're great cut flowers.

No I don't cut them. They last longer on the stem and I pass them every time I go in or out of the house. SOmetimes I just have to stop and sniff! You have to beware of the pollen or it gets on your clothes. I notice most florists cut off the stamens (?) to remove the pollen. I agree that they are just gorgeous in arrangements.

I also tend to leave my flowers blooming in the garden rather than bringing them inside the house.

Yes I know about the pollen as I've had it stain a white tablecloth when it fell from a Christmas bouquet that I had on the dining room table.

Beautiful indeed. I don't grow lilies, the critters have their way with them too easily. I have some daylilies but not the priceless hybrids. i have some Canada Lily volunteers, I covet them and I manage to tuck some into spaces where the deer don't get them.

Those are just drop dead gorgeous! They are a favorite of mine...I planted a few when we lived at the lake, and they "spread" beautifully. The people who bought my house mowed down my lily bed and my iris bed...those sick, sick people., LOL

Pam, your stargazers are gorgeous! Mine should be opening tomorrow or the next day. They are a favorite of mine too. So much so I named my shop Stargazer Art Glass!

Linda, did you really! What a perfect name for a store.

Bubbe, I like yours. That droopy look is very nice. The deer eat all the lilies they can get to around here. Mine are between the house and the garage and it would take a deer with a lot of chutzpah to walk back there. On the other hand, I didn't see the ones on the side of my house for two years, although the deer have missed them for a couple years now.

I cannot imagine ever mowing down lilies. As for iris, I plan to dig up some of mine. They bloom for such a short time and alwasy fall over, plus the greenery looks awful the rest of the summer. They are just ordinary yellow ones.

My iris were every wonderful color in the rainbow...and then some. I agree that the greenery is not very pretty, but they were soooo beautiful. I sure miss them. Now I am in the shade and can't grow a lot of anything.

I have some caladium that are so pretty and are growing in the shade. Also astilbe and columbine. I think hosta gardens are gorgeous. The hellebores that come up late in winter do well in shade.

No excuses, sheshe, get that shade garden growing!

I really will get a shade garden growing, but not until we put in a patio. That MIGHT be next year, we will see.

I am in the same boat...very little sun. But, I think this fall I am going to dig up part of the back yard and make myself a bed where there is some sun! Some of my bee balms are doing okay, but would be spectacular with more sun. And of course I need room for more daylilies!

I have lots of hosta, ligularia, astilbe, columbine, etc in my shade beds. One of my favorite shade plants is Cimicifuga Racemosa. Beautful burgundy foliage and in late summer it sends up spikes of white, heavenly schented flowers!

Renee, your gardens are amazing. I'm sure you are out there doing all the weeding, dividing, mulching all by yourself. Right? I just love the way your hostas compliment each other. I want one of everythng and since I don't have a whole lot of space, I end up with a mishmosh.

oh Renee, your gardens are ;lovely. We have maidenhair growing wild all over our woods. I have moved several into my gardens, and given some to friends, too. They are my favorite fern.

My stargazers are finally opening this morning, they should be fully opened by tonight or early tomorrow. I could smell them 4 days ago! Heaven!

Oh Pam they are just beautiful. MY FAVORITE! They made up my wedding bouquet. And my hubby sent them to me on our 1st anniversary & on each birth of our daughters.
Now I have to beat him over the head to get any flowers, I guess the honeymoon is over ....married for 13 years now? Now I get appliances that he breaks. HAA HAA!

Pam, I planted everything you see in the gardens, but confess to hiring a woman to weed for 4 hours a week.

I planted too many gardens and am only here 3.5 days a week. DH just said I have over 5,000 sq feet planted. I do love to dig, mulch,and plant. Weeding? not so much! DH doesn't garden. He shakes his head, but admires my work.

I hired the garden lady in spring 2000 when DD's wedding was coming up and I didn't want to walk her down the aisle with black fly bites all over me. LOL. Now, with all the babies, I had even less time than before.

I have sworn off adding any new gardens. I only divide, shift, and amend them now, or add a new plant, tree, or shrub.

We lost a linden tree last week that I planted in 1994. I may replace it.

I love lilies, but they don't like my garden space. Casablanca lilies are my favorites....wall those and the tall asiatics.
My gardens are gettings shadier all the time, so I am adding more and more hosta, cimicifuga, solomon't seas, thalactrum, pulmonaria etc...
Also finding that hosta are a lot more tolerant of sun and other things of shade that I had thought.

I have one new bed that I am slowly adding to. There's so much I want. Right now is not a good time to plant, so I am making a list for fall. I had some "volunteer" columbine, so I moved them over there.

If I could, I would do nothing but play in the yard. However, I can't tkae the heat and humidity, plus I have a full time job and I find I do not have the zip that I used to have! When I retire I'll do more --- slowly.

Renee, you must still have plenty of energy if you are doing most of the work on those beds.

My Stargazer's just started to open, I picked a stem last evening and it is perfuming the entire downstairs.
