Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

lights over my island_low ceiling

I am trying to chose lights for over my island (9 feet). I was all ready to order the ones here -love love love them- but when I told the salesperson my ceilings were only 89" high he said I dont have enough height for them. It seems my options are to select other pendants or go with the same style but do it semi flush mount. I googled looking for pics of semi flush lights over an island and could barely find any examples. I tend to think it wouldn't look great so why spend all the $ on the fixtures to have it look average. Anyone have any suggestions as to which route to take or even where I can find some pics of semi flush mounted lights over an island?

Do recessed lights instead. You don’t have room for pendants, or even most semi flush fixtures.

I agree with her, you should do recessed because it will close the space off, look busy/overwhelming, and take to buyer specific

Well I think I'm already at that "age"...lol. I don't really want to cut holes in the mirror (more of a personal choice than I can't do it). I do have the higher toilet, countertop, etc. I should mention that this is not the master bath, but it is a bath that will get use from guests and my husband uses it as well. So you DO think the shaded light from a schoolhouse light is NOT bright enough? That's what I hear you saying. If so, I guess its back to trying to find a pendant light that is open on the bottom? Any other ideas?

8ft kitch ceiling, what type of light over island?

Thought I would update the thread I started when I was trying to figure out what type of light to get for above the island with an 8 foot ceiling. Well here are some pics. We chose a pendant light we found (Juno onyx) at Design Expo. With our GC's help we got a flat ceiling mount/transformer (the one at the store was more conical) We wanted something with a low profile, because of the 8 ft ceiling. We love it. Thanks to all of you for your invaluable help. Here are some close up pics of the lights.

I'm not going to get into the conversation over height of pendant lights, but I will add that you should definitely mix metals. It's what gives kitchens visual interest, makes them look custom/new/modern, and keeps them from looking like builder grade. And that would be especially important to you because your kitchen is so white and could lean to the boring side if you're not careful. So in other words ... do not match your pendant lights to your faucet finish.

I meant that the pendants will be all of those things, the recessed is what you should do

waltham_kara what did you end up doing? I have to disagree with the above I have seen tons of examples with low ceilings and pendants that look great.
