Long narrow great room in our new home - needs an overhaul - help!
Comments (7)The scale of your furniture will be immensely important. Loft/apartment sized pieces will save you a lot of space and heartache. Personally, I would try to use the kitchen as the formal dining space, making use of the long wall for a settee, a trestle table and chairs. A round dining table is going to require 36" of space all around for chairs to scoot out and to navigate around. Taking advantage of the wall and a slim table will make a big difference. Then you'll have all the rest of the space in the front to make two seating areas; one for TV up front where there is a wall for the TV on a credenza, a 3-seat sofa and a chair. The middle area by the stairs would be for cocktails, conversation, reading with a nice pair of chairs, floor lamp and area rug....See MoreArrange furniture and decorate long and narrow room
Comments (6)Visit any Habitat for Humanity Restore Store and/or any "antique" -- used furniture store -- or charity sponsored thrift store that is large enough to sell donated furniture and you're likely to find one or more of those cabinets (tall and deep) that were used for large analog tvs -- until someone upgraded to the thinner digital tvs. Quality and supply of donated cabinets varies so it could take multiple trips to find a really good one you'd want in your home but do see if you can because, in addition to being easier on the budget than new furniture, you might find it useful for storage even if you don't choose to create a toy kitchen for the little one: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/521925044290872951/ https://www.pinterest.com/pin/AS5jzll5LQUFkFFlZEv9oGvR8UOFnLFzAyBvF5hZreJmcNbFLfcGVMw/ https://www.pinterest.com/pin/240238961342141195/ Some DIY work on used cabinets such as to close any cord holes in the back and/or add shelves or doors, could enable you to repurpose one to become much needed toy storage now and, depending upon what it looked like before and/or what you create, perhaps a linen cabinet later -- and do so on a modest budget. In a small space, "go tall when you can secure cabinets to the wall" (for safety w/toddler in the house) in order to maximize storage with minimum floor space used. If you could create floor to ceiling and nearly wall to wall edge shelves and/or cabinets (or cubes of a suitable size for baskets or creates you choose), the storage space that your daughter could reach could be hers and the storage/display space above that would be yours. It would be a plus if you could set your tv on a center shelf to have it out of reach of a toddler but at a comfortable height for viewing. If you don't limit you shelving to the blue wall but, instead, turn the corner and continue the shelves/cabinets along the side wall (for whatever width you choose for the play space), you could use that shelving/cabinetry on the side wall to hide any wires/cables you might want/need attached to both your computer and your tv. You'd want to leave several feet of play space in between whatever furniture you place next -- which, I suppose, could be your sofa for watching tv. Alternately, you might choose to use a long credenza styled cabinet and/or file cabinet to use as a room divider between the play area and your adjacent home office area. Everything between the home office area and the front wall would be your living/dining area....See MoreFurniture layout in long, narrow living room
Comments (27)So... If you are still interested in the Iris chair at all, just want to let you know the chair is actually grey, not brown. They are calling the color Pewter. It looks so brown on my monitor. Here is pic from customer review of Iris loveseat. This is the pillow that also comes with chair. (Doggie not included. 😂 So cute. Precious.) Anyway, even better. You could just toss a grey lumbar into sofa pillow mix - or just simply use only one grey pillow or throw if you prefer! As one example, this oversized lumbar from Target is fun. https://www.target.com/p/oversized-lumbar-velvet-throw-pillow-with-tassels-gray-threshold-8482/-/A-79587619?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df_free_online&CPNG=Home%2BDecor&adgroup=67-8&ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=bing_pla_df&fndsrc=tgtao&DFA=71700000012733992&CPNG=PLA_Home%2BDecor%2BShopping&adgroup=SC_Home%2BDecor&LID=700000001230728&LNM=PRODUCT_GROUP&network=o&device=t&location=&targetid=pla-4585581967312127:aud-805670406&ds_rl=1246978&ds_rl=1248099&ds_rl=1247068&msclkid=5d9112dca58b12e8c5d14d5a74840855&gclid=5d9112dca58b12e8c5d14d5a74840855&gclsrc=3p.ds...See MoreArranging Long and Narrow Living/Dining Room with Door in Center
Comments (2)Hi Jenn, What a lovely home! The woodwork and mouldings are charming. As are the pieces you've chosen and arranged. I agree that "falling onto" the living room furniture can be disconcerting. Personally, I like your idea to leave the TV and seating where it is and move the dining table (or a smaller version) into the front area. I would snuggle the shorter side of the table up near the radiator and just have chairs along the longer edges. It could function more like a desk, library table, or entry table when it's not in the center of the room. Depending on how hot your radiator gets, you might be able to have a desk lamp at the end. You could pull the table out into the center of the room when you host larger dinners. Also, moving the dining table to the front of the house is probably the easiest arrangement try out. If you don't like it, you can always move on the the option you sketched up! I hope that helps! Best of luck. Doug...See Morearmchairshopper
