Blank Slate for Layout Ideas
Comments (32)The only potential 'problem' I see with the corner range...is backing into the corner of that island, when you need to take something out of the oven. That isn't a problem with the Candice Olson kitchen, because it's a table placed further away, not an island. You have some great alternatives, already...in fact, the only option I haven't seen is the main sink on the island. I'm not sure how much you can 'move into' the dining area, but if you could add a few feet (and another window) something like this might work. Keep the pantry and fridge as is and move the range to the 'sink wall' with the sink/dishwasher and trash on the island. You would still have the stools and easy access to the dining area...just another idea. Here's a picture I'm using for my kitchen plan, but I'm just thinking of the range wall, for your kitchen :) From Farmhouse plans...See MoreAny ideas for this blank slate?
Comments (20)I've read the whole thread and do understand the back story. But I honestly would think long and hard about hanging on to a house in that position. However many plants you put around it it's still practically underneath a highway. From a health and well being point of view I would really not want to live there. It's not just noise. Have you ever had the air monitored? There's nothing to be done about the road, other than tree planting. But something can be done about the house. I wouldn't spend any more money on it. I'd try and sell it....See Morelibrary design for a blank slate
Comments (5)Finally someone thinking library rather than how big of a tv will go on the wall. I think your ideas of leather, scotch bar etc. is a great beginning. My husband built bookcases around our living room fireplace. When I used all those up we moved upstairs which is open to the living room downstairs, with an octagon opening. There was room for a window seat upstairs, so we built one with storage under it and on both ends, added more bookcases up there. I love it. I can look over the railings and see the fireplace downstairs. Then I got carried away and added a copper ceiling above the window seat. One suggestion.....gray walls don’t say library to me. More warmth, with color and perhaps an oriental rug, floor lamps next to your leather chairs. Don’t forget the glass decanters for the scotch. Keep us updated on your progress. Comments (20)I'm not familiar with mondo grass... @mad_gallica (z5 Eastern NY), when I bought my house almost 20 years ago, there were 5 bunches of mondo grass used to accent the walkway to the front door. It was pretty! Two years later, they had grown to about 4 times their original size :-O I had to dig them all up, tear them into chunks, and replant smaller portions. I didn't have anywhere else for the excess, so I threw it into the woods. Where it all took root and did just fine. The next year, I sprayed the excess with Round Up. I swear I heard the mondo grass laugh! And, of course, the Round Up had no impact. The next year, I started trying to sell the excess locally. I sold a lot, but I still had more! So I started giving it away to anyone and everyone. I started planting bunches along EVERY walkway, but quickly realized my mistake... every other year, I have to dig it ALL up and split it!!! Last year, I gave a guy an entire flatbed full of it! And now, I could probably give away the same amount. Long story short, it looks like tall grass and has deep roots, but it's semi-evergreen and seemingly indestructible. You can literally dig it up and sit it on gravel and it'll root, no problem. And it will choke out pretty much anything in its path. That makes it a GREAT solution for erosion control, except that it's not particularly attractive. That's why I'm hesitant to use it as the introduction to the property. Lemme know if you want some mondo grass!! :-D...See MoreRose Peck
