**BEARS (First disease, then bugs, then squirrels, now bears!!)
Comments (19)Bears happen. Here in Montana black bears do wander into our town (well, small city) and cause a lot of problems in orchards and dumpsters. Fish and Game or Wildlife and Parks will humanely deal with them pretty quickly. Usually they dart them and relocate them, sometimes trap. They almost never find it necessary to kill them. I've taken to carrying pepper spray when I'm in the mountains now (as much for wolves and cougar as for bear) and you might consider it. This is a pint aerosol that goes off with a very loud bang and sends a cloud of capsaicin. It has been known to turn charging grizzlies, which is a good trick. One experience with it will convince Black Bear to seek friendlier neighborhoods. Expect to pay forty or fifty bucks for a can. Local bear expert Jamie Jonkel says it will, in fact, deter 9 of 10 grizzlies .... There's no warranty for the tenth bear. You'd have to lay in wait for your bruin, so it may not be practical. I can imagine trying to convince my wife that I needed to sit up and stare at my trees until daybreak! Good luck. We all sympathise. :-)M...See MoreCamping with bears!
Comments (6)The February issues of Field & Stream and Outdoor Life contained special sections on bear attacks and fatalities. They found that the liklihood of surviving a bear attack was much greater for victims who were armed, and rarely are victims able to outrun the bear. Bears sense fear and running as capitulation and will attack. As hunters, we tend to be armed when were in bear country. As armed campers, we've been in campgrounds during cougar sightings. As human beings, we intend on being survivors and enjoying the great outdoors. We wouldn't take a drive in our cars unarmed much less enter the wilderness without that dependable survival equipment....See MoreI Just Chased a Would-Be Burglar Away!
Comments (45)Yes, it was a crazy morning! I'm so glad that I was here to actually see them and their car, and report it. I'm now wondering how many more "almosts" have happened while I was gone and Knight scared someone away. It's given DH and I a lot to think about. Especially the motion-activated flood lights outside and the doorbell camera. They've been advertising one on tv here a lot lately, at August.com, I think. As for dusk-to-dawn lights outside, it's considered a real no-no out here. It ruins everyone's ability to enjoy our amazingly clear and brilliant night skies. Seriously. Up here at 6,000 ft above sea level, our skies are usually very clear and people enjoy being able to see so many stars, constellations and planets. It's ok to have motion activated lights, but anything that stays on all night is not acceptable. We don't even have lights on any road in our village. Anyone keeping a porch light on consistently all night is considered a very inconsiderate neighbor and will definitely hear complaints....See MoreHikers: Bear spray?
Comments (28)Thanks to you all for the very helpful insights. I did order a canister of bear spray yesterday, and read up on how to use it - as well as other precautions to take while hiking in bear country. Definitely wouldn't use the spray on a non-aggressive bear if we just happen to come upon one - but will feel a little better about being armed with it on the miniscule chance that we encounter an attacking animal. I spoke with my backcountry-savvy brother yesterday, who said the most afraid he's ever been while hiking was on a trail somewhere outside of Colorado Springs. He was in a rocky ravine and spotted a mountain lion on the ridge above, following along. The cat continued to track him for some time, and eventually ran up a tree and watched him from that point for some time before finally coming down and wandering off. I believe he said something along the lines of desperately needing a change of underpants after that encounter! I think I'll also order a couple of very loud whistles to carry with us. I can think of a couple of different scenarios where one would want to make a lot of noise and call attention to themselves and their location....See MoreUser
