How to convert 1 zone ductless AC to multi zone

Hello ,

I can`t find any info on the web about this option .

I have 35000 BTU AC with one zone , i willing to make it multi zone without to replace the outside unit ,

I need some air handler with 4-5 zones

Is there any air handlers that not wall mount ? that can fit Mitsubishi AC?

Mitsubishi makes ceiling recessed and low static pressure (minimally ducted) indoor units and floor consoles.

The link that you posted has a picture that looks like no mini split equipment that I have ever seen physically or in catalogs. It looks like a central AHU with a plenum waiting for ducts to be attached, or outputs designed to spread output over a large space. Please clarify.

There’s a thread on the Heating and AC forum that’s been running for two years debating the issue of high installation costs. It’s a great read; the link is below. Mini splits have been used throughout the world for decades, but are new in this country and there’s very little competition to bring installation costs down. Most homeowners and many contractors have never heard of them. With increased efficiencies and units that can now heat a space when the outside temperature is as low as -15 degrees, they’re starting to become better known and more available in the northeast and Canada as an alternative to oil heat in locations where natural gas is not available. (This is not a sales pitch, lol; I've become obsessed with the subject.) This year, for the first time, I’ve seen a few local HVAC companies running ads for mini-splits (I live near Albany, NY). Installation of the wall unit is probably easier than the ceiling cassette or ducted style, which is one reason I’ll likely go with a pro. To the OP (sorry to hijack your thread), please let us know what you decide to do. @bstruss -- From what I've read, the Friedrich mini is manufactured by one of the big Japanese companies. Though Mitsubishi, Fujitsu and Daiken are the top tier leaders in the field, there are many lesser known units for much less $. Some of them get great reviews. But I haven't seen any other specifically marketed to DIY homeowners. Let us know what you find out about the Friedrich. I thought it was minimum of 3 zones up to 5 zones. anyway, as to savings... as you mention not heating/cooling some areas like living are at night has a savings. comfort is a great thing with zoned systems because you can control temps by tstats rather than one tstat controlling whole house. eventually all motors fail. motors on zone dampers are not excluded. any early failures would be covered under warranty & you may have to pay labor to change. you'd have to weigh cost of zone equipment control board, motorized dampers & multiple tstats. against cost of install without zoning. factor in things like vs ahu's, two stage equipment etc to get the numbers to compare. another issue is getting a contractor with experience in zoned systems. I've always found a zoned system to be great & homeowners love it...but if the contractor hasn't done a zoned system, or uses a different brand than they are used to..it can be a disaster. in any event, compare the numbers shop for experienced contractors & get opinions/bids from them. it will be easy to tell who understands zoned systems & who doesn't once you talk to a few companies. best of luck.

It depends on how your system is designed. I am far from a forced air expert, but based on my reading, there are two ways to achieve the air variable flow required for zoning. The old-fashioned way is to install bypass ducts feeding air back to the return when dampers are closed. The other way is with a variable-speed blower. The latter is the way of the future even without zones. Why do you want zones? If for energy savings, it might not be that effective. If for comfort, evening out temperature upstairs and down, I understand. This is a multi-story building? If it is 2 story you could put the heat pump compressor on the roof, but that won't be inexpensive either.

The biggest problem with HVAC zone systems is knowing when to choose it as a solution and when not to. Some HVAC companies it's about "sell, sell, sell" whether or not it works... there's more money in "sell, sell, sell" --- when it's only about money? So does the comment above mean I do it for free? No. If you think that you are reading things that aren't there. New construction? best to choose separate systems 9 times out of 10. In order for a zone system to work, you have to know what you are doing. Most HVAC companies staff (the techs they send you) are 20-30 year olds. How much practical experience could they possible have? It's best for HVAC zone systems to be an elegant solution. A HVAC zone system is a tool in the tool bag. Not all homes are suitable for zone systems. Some homes there is no other way, and in some cases complications to those problems will make an HVAC zone system design possibly more prone to problems. You have a problem now, do you want more problems. These decisions among others are decided "in person" --- so considering that becareful what information you decide upon from the internet. Just because it's here doesn't necessarily mean it's true. That said: Depending on equipment level chosen, how many different floors you have in your structure, how much room you have available... will all be factors that make you decide one way or another. From there it's in your best interest to pick a contractor that is skilled: especially when it comes to HVAC zone systems. (there's a lot of garbage out there.) Hello,
Thanks for your reply, yes it should central air unit waiting to be ducted .

Is it possible to combine the outside unit to this central unit and make dumpers with thermostat in each room?

If you have 35000 btu from the outdoor unit...it means you can installed 2 indoor with 12000 btu and 1 indoor unit with 9000 btu.
