Thrip question for Jim PA and others

Morning all,

Jim I have a question about your thrip control. Do you deadhead as soon as the bloom is past open and starts looking unattractive? Then toss the spent flower in water/dishwash bucket mixture like used for JBs?

Thanks for any clarification. I also have thrips on my astilbe flowers. I guess I'll be tossing these too.

I deadhead right before bloom starts falling apart and it does look unattractive at that point... lol...If I see any [beneficial[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/thrip-question-for-jim-pa-and-others-dsvw-vd~5400930) insects I make sure they get out before I toss spent bloom into a plastic bag to trash...But yes never thought of it but you could toss spent bloom into a bucket of water...I deadhead everyday....

While doing this I also [scout[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/thrip-question-for-jim-pa-and-others-dsvw-vd~5400930) for JB's and other troubles...

Most of the time there are more factors involved that even we are not aware of so its really hard to know whats really working in the organic control department...lol.....So I continue to do things as long as they are working...

This year I did not plant any Marigolds in the backyard and our Rose Slugs are worse...But on the other hand the bright [yellow[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/thrip-question-for-jim-pa-and-others-dsvw-vd~5400930) Marigolds may of been [attracting[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/thrip-question-for-jim-pa-and-others-dsvw-vd~5400930) thrips...??? I did plant some ORANGE Marigolds at side of house to see what happens...

I'm afraid fighting off bad insects will always be a ongoing thing...lol...

I've been giving the rose slugs a break these days by letting them eat leaves on the [larger[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/thrip-question-for-jim-pa-and-others-dsvw-vd~5400930) roses but I do pick them off young roses...

Took these pics last night at dusk...These guys can really eat...lol

York Rose, I'm afraid you might be right about the Chilli Thrips inevitably returning. Just wondering if anyone has any "inside scoop" on the issue. Jim, thanks for the well-wishes; as for Pandora's box, I guess we owe that one to international commerce and travel. Someone at our local Ag. extension told me they find out about multiple new invasive species of both insects and diseases pretty much every year. Generally, that's a very bad thing for the ecosystem. Every so often it's benign. For example, New Orleans is now full of many thousands of green parots that live in the local palm trees (palm trees also NOT native). No one knows for sure where they came from, but Many parts of Florida also have the same species (quaker parots). Luckily, it seems the quaker birds have an almost identical dietary need to the Carolina Parakeet that went extinct here a century or so ago. So the new birds fit right in. They're fun to watch, too. I manage an Autozone store and of course we sell Duralast batteries. They are made by Johnson Controls (JCI). Heres and excerpt from Consumer reports that may or may not be correct... "Most auto batteries are made by just three manufacturers, Delphi, Exide, and Johnson Controls Industries. Each makes batteries sold under several different brand names. Delphi makes ACDelco and some EverStart (Wal-Mart) models. Exide makes Champion, Exide, Napa, and some EverStart batteries. Johnson Controls makes Diehard (Sears), Duralast (AutoZone), Interstate, Kirkland (Costco), Motorcraft (Ford), and some EverStarts." Just for the record...all batteries sold at Autozone do have a warranty. That includes L&G and Marine. Don't let an ignorant or uncaring employee snowball you. Autozone is just like any other store...the stores with quality, caring employees is great...stores where the management hires anyone with a pulse should be avoided.

I have Jim Bishop cabinets. In the first 12 months of wear I had many problems. 1) Finish wearing off around knobs. Looks like they are 20 years old. Poor quality finish. 2) Pantry closet (which wasn't cheap) split in half. 3) drawer under sink split in half 4) faded cabinet doors within 3 years. I complained early on... finally, a JB rep came to my house. He promised some repair. He never returned or called. Finally spoke with someone from JB who told me it was too late to do anything. AND... the wear and tear was my fault. I can't believe that the finish would wear off in the first year and that be my fault. Poor quality and poor customer service. Eventually I will have to replace the kitchen because of the worn out appearance. VERY DISAPPOINTED.

So I've been seeing the new growth on a lot of my roses looking wrinkly and the buds tiny and brown. After reading this thread, I figured why not try this cup idea. All I had were small white cups, so I just coated them with coconut oil spray and put them outside about 30 minutes ago. I just checked and it looks like I caught a few and probably some dirt too... so I'm hopeful this will work! I put out about 15 cups. I thought it was the heat causing the problem with my roses and now realize that's only part of the problem, it certainly appears to be thrips!
