Don't Do LG Topload Washer Recall Unless You Want Wet Clothes
Comments (56)Today I've been playing the good customer and going through the paces to address this issue with the LG Washing Machine I purchased via BestBuy in January 2012. In the fall of 2013 I received a notice in the mail that my unit needed to be upgraded (you know the story). At that time we would get an occasional unbalance code. I wasn't aware of all the back-story on this washer. I called LG Recall (1-855-400-4639) and they had a local service provider come out and "upgrade" the software in October 2013. Very soon afterwards the machine consistently gave a uE code and often as not able to finish a single wash cycle, even after attempting to re-balance several times, and finally giving a UE code. We put up with this through the holidays and spring time of 2014 by running the washer and always choosing the "no spin" option. Then when the cycle finished (sometimes with a UE and sometimes not) we would then run a 13 minutes "spin only" cycle which we would have to monitor throughout the entire 13 minutes to stop the machine and attempt to re-balance the load if a uE code was given again. Most often this DID give a uE code meaning that we'd have to start the 13 minute spin only cycle again. In most cases we usually get to a point where we think most of the water had been removed, still very wet by normal standards, and just give up and throw the clothes in the dryer where they go through an extra long drying cycle since there is more water in the clothes than there should be anyway. Today I called LG Recall again and told them that the "upgrade" made the situation worse. They sent me through to the "special diagnosis" team who had me put the phone next to the washer, listen for fax-like tones and discovered that, yes, I was telling the truth. There are uE and UE codes being alerted. They then scheduled a visit from a local contractor and told me that I should expect a confirmation call from the contractor. The contractor called and said they would be charging me $89 for a diagnosis. I was not told this by LG, so I refused the service and called LG back. The recall line (who had set up the appointment) told me that they couldn't help me any further and I needed to speak with Customer Service. I called customer service (1-800-243-0000) who told me they could get the "A&E Service" to come out for a "one-time repair" at not cost. They gave me a case number and the phone number for A&E Service (888-433-3892) to schedule this visit. A&E said they couldn't accept a call from me, and could only schedule the visit if Customer Service was on the line. I called Customer Service again. (for today that is already 2 calls, and another two calls to LG Recall, and one call to A&E). This time Customer Service told me that they would cancel the previous service call request, and set up a new request for a local service to come out on Monday to service the washer, at no charge. I will come back to continue to record the events, as a means of reference for my own purposes, but also in hopes that it is useful to others. I haven't seen that anyone has had this problem resolved through these local contractor service visits, but at least I'm going through the paces and will be able to convince LG that I've been cooperative and done everything I can on my side in case I have to insist on a buy-back or replacement. I see that some others have had some success in that regard and I'm trying to follow the model....See MoreNo final spin on old Kitchenaid KAWE560W washer
Comments (18)The water does drain, just no spin? --> that's correct. During the last part of the cycle when it should be spinning, it just sits there making a humming noise (not an unusual noise, one of its regular noises, just not the spinning sound/vibration). If you catch it in the act and stop/restart (push/pull the timer), does it spin then? --> Yep. Are you sure it's only the final spin that's failing? There's a spin after wash, before agitated rinse and it's not obvious if that's also failing unless you watch/monitor the machine for the entire cycle. --> I have monitored and the other spin periods seem to be OK. Also if I run the permanent press cycle that seems to go OK including the spin parts (but the final spin on that cycle is much shorter). When the final spin fails, when the machine stops the clothes are wetter than they should be, especially under the water outlet where the "spray rinse" just dribbled water on the clothes that happened to be situated under it. If I reset the knob to repeat the final spin, then it spins, and another couple quarts of water are removed. Assuming the lid switch is not being erratic, there's the timer (already changed by you), internal transmission components related to neutral drain and driving the clutch bell, the clutch & brake components outside the transmission (which includes the spin tube & drive block to which the basket mounts), or the reverse motor windings/wiring. --> I have tried running the machine with the lid switch jimmied shut, and that does not help. But if I open the lid to check if it's spinning, and then close it again, then it does start to spin. I do think it's either a lack of motor pause, or something worn out in the transmission as you mentioned earlier. I was wondering if the OP (corsairf4u) tried installing the neutral drain repair kit and if so whether that worked. One other idea I had. When I replaced the timer, I kept the old one, which apparently is still perfectly good. So I have one to play with. I was wondering if I could file or bend something on there to create the motor pause. P.S. Thanks for the analysis and advice...See MoreSamsung washers do use internal heater in normal modes
Comments (22)My WF218 that I did the original testing on is still going strong (just did three loads on this fine Saturday afternoon). My routine has adapted as follows: -Tankless hot water heater set to 140F. One of the benefits of tankless is no wasted energy on standby losses with higher setting. I don't run higher for risk of scalding my toddler in the tub or shower. -I don't have a laundry sink, but just noting that if I had one, like Todd above I would prime the hot water to get the standing cold water out of the pipes. I do this for my kitchen dishwasher, which is quite far from the water heater. -I have the cold water shutoff throttled down. It seems like the Samsung's still pull some from the cold water supply when you are filling for warm or hot. Not sure if this really helps, but I do feel like throttling it down nets more from the hot supply. Like someone mentioned you can't shut off cold completely, plus you need it for the rinses anyway. -I try to wash in larger loads, as the larger loads fill more water, and thus the cold standing water in the pipes becomes diluted with more hot water. -Lastly, since we don't wash towels separately, my wife doesn't use the Towels mode, and so when I do the laundry, I've basically taken over Towels mode as my full Manual mode. It has full access to all temps and settings, and will remember my last used settings, which I'll run 80% of the time in H/C, to net about a 120F wash for most laundry including colors. A 130F or 140F option would definitely be nice, but I've been OK with the 120F washes....See MoreDirty/Moldy Washers -- Toploaders *and* Frontloaders
Comments (45)I have a Bravos XL - we did a bearing & seal replacement on it for the second time this year earlier today. It was in much better shape inside than it was in March when we last did the bearings - I was shocked how bad the inside was last March - it was worse than Dadoes picture. A pressure washer was needed to get it clean! I started using a Ahhh-some I had for my hot tub on the Bravos every few months. This time after taking the thing apart again I was surprised how clean it was (I did a Ahh-some treatment this morning). I would like to find a washer that completely empties the tub after each use - not sure if that exists....See Moreprovidencesparrow
