Fleabane does cover a wide range of plants. ;-) Including aster. None which I have sown. They grow on a place where I have sown two types of melon. But I saw them nowhere else in the garden. I hoped it was melon, but I doubted it, because I was told they are hard to grow in the Netherlands and I am just starting. So I suppose I can remove them and sow something else. A pity, but what I expected. Or maybe I transplant them to a part of the garden where I do not mind to have flowers. Some versions look nice and all attract insects I think.

The dark aphids could be those that are parasitized, in which case the ladybugs won't be interested. Parasitized aphids are called 'aphid mummies', since the exoskeleton remains in place even though their insides have been devoured by the minute larva of a parasitoid wasp. They aren't the larvae of another type of insect, they are aphids....either black ones or mummies. Glad that the beetles stuck around to do some good! I'm not a fan of using horticultural oils on aphids in the growing season. Where are you located, anyway? You would kill the ladybug larvae and their eggs, as well. But I do know that oil applications in the dormant season can be very effective in smothering the overwintering eggs of those pesky aphids. Spraying the bare stems, branches, and trunk a couple of times over the dormant season can be hugely helpful in curtailing the population that you see in the spring.

Couch grass, Elymus repens, is also known as Quack Grass, Quick grass, Witch grass, and others not printable, but I have never heard it called Bermuda grass, before. It spreads by both seeds and rhizomes and the common plant poisons do not do a good job of controlling it, or it would not need repeated applications to attempt to control it. The best means of getting rid of this pesky "weed" is to dig it out getting all of the root bits and pieces. kimmq is kimmsr
