5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoIf this were my home, I'd want to add pergola in the front.... Make an inviting seating area. Paint your front door a bright color. Perhaps you can find some large matching ceramic pots for a sculptural succulent tree
You pic reminds me of So California water shortage landscape / xeriscape....
Since this is a bright hot sunny climate do not be tempted to go with an all over dark color. Observe what happens to dark painted cars.... The colors fade. The same will happen to your house color.

Comments (10)Generically, I would stay away from any yellow/brown/oranges in your paint color scheme. Personally, I think the dark trim scheme works against you. It would be better if the house body color were a medium tone and the trim much lighter, all the way to white even. Agree with all those who've said to remove the stripes. They give a mobile home vibe to the house. Can't tell details of what's going on now with the tiny picture. In the future, try slightly overlapping pictures (larger ones!) that show a wide view scene, that is centered on the front door. To be sure, create a large landing for the stoop. Pull the walk away from the house (6', 8', 10'...?) in order to allow adequate space for a nice foundation planting. In most cases, in order to preserve planting bed possibilities, it makes sense to direct the walk toward the back of cars parked directly in front of the garage. Comments (40)Everybody has an opinion, which you asked for, but you have to do what is best for you in your neighborhood. If you are replacing the siding and thinking about doing all the work of painting brick, maybe you should just remove some of that brick altogether. If you leave some of it, have it be lower and even across...maybe 1/3 of the height of the walls instead of half. Keep the excess brick for edging or patio like someone else suggested. I liked the trim-work you added. Definitely do not paint the garage door the same as the front. Keep it in the lighter tone of your siding color choice. This way the front door is a focal point. Do not replace the garage door if it is not needed. There's no reason to add the expense ($1700 or more). I would use the existing shrubs as background to a much larger planted area. Allow budget for mulching that planting bed and, for what it's worth, consider using rubber bark mulch. It definitely is more expensive, but it is worth it in the long run if you're planning on living there. Rubber bark does not attract termites or roaches, it doesn't fade, it doesn't disintegrate, and it doesn't blow away so it doesn't need to be replaced every 2 years like bark mulch. It keeps tires out of the landfill! Anyway, updating is a great idea, but keep in mind why you are choosing to do so. If you are going to live there, spend what you want. If you are updating to sell, keep your budget as low as possible because you won't recoup much of it and expenses can only be subtracted from profits on the house. Comments (7)what kind of budget are you talking?? remove the deck, redo siding, paint brick or stucco it, new windows less costly, you could Romabio the brick, they used it on this brick (which used to be red) get diff siding, remove the shutters, paint the garage door. whatever you do decide, the shutters should be removed. RIP. if you have extra money, turn that walkout deck into more sq footage. ignore the color and style, just look at the layout. similar to yours. see how the 'deck overhang' has been enclosed? Is that something you could do? or just remove it? See how they pushed it out and did wood siding? Comments (7)No dark browns. Cream and red brick is classic. If you are a bit more adventurous you can do a bit of blue or green with some cream. This brick isn't as dark as yours, but I think the blue and cream they used would be great colors on your home as well....See MoreC M

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoThis is the sculptural plant ceramic pot idea. We had two large ceramic pots on both sides of the exterior entryway.... We painted the front door teal to coordinate with them. Overall, it expanded the front entryway with color.
(These pots are usually mported from Vietnam-Google Vietnamese pots. You should be able to find them. We went to the City of industry and got a great deal
Place this red spikey plant: Cordyline red star in twin pots that match your front door.
Use others as a sculptural accent to your front garden...
Also, consider Meyers fern aka foxtail fern These have an intense green color and a whimsical shape, which makes them my favorite zone 9 plant. These are best used in a front yard planter, as they can produce some (minimal) berries. Yet, I always worry about pets

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoI like the house color- taupe. Fresh white paint would help. Obviously. some greenery would help, but it is not very practical with the water rates there.
I'd make an inviting seating area - wherever you get shade. Ideally, I'd choose all across the front right and left of the door. larger window area has greater visibility.
Will your front yard furniture grow legs and walk away, like in LA county suburbs? Perhaps you can anchor it with cement?
Perhaps add a re-circulating water feature? Will the water nazis fine you for that? (They did where we lived and cited 'water evaporation' as the reason)

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoSince you have drought landscaping, If this were my house, I would want to add color in anyway possible.....I'd choose a refreshing water color front door: Aqua, teal, soft turquoise and white shutters and trim.
Id accentuate the front door color with ceramic pottery placed right and left of the walkway. It will make the front entrance inviting.
Add drought tolerant lush landscaping with Meyers ferns and this flowering machine-bougainvillea on a trellis. It is blooms in fall, spring, and summer. Although it has thorns, it won't matter much as you won't be trimming it.
