Kitchen remodel - going through final design...opinions wanted!
Comments (10)Thanks for the replies, but I'm going to have to challenge a few questions. 1) PPBenn/KathyN: It is definitely feasible to move the stove to the 101 1/2" wall - I appreciate that point. I could perhaps only do base cabinets and the range along this wall. If I only added a range hood, I wouldn't see a huge impact in price, without wall cabinets. I could keep the peninsula then. 2) Based on everyone's recommendation, I'll go with a 36" fridge. 3) Live Wire: If I make this an "L" shape, I lose the bar seating, with is a top priority for me. I want a dine-in area in the kitchen. Also, if I go with an "L" shape, I would either have to put the fridge on the window wall, or put the stove and fridge on the window wall. Please advise. Also, assuming the same setup as proposed, I could make the corner cabinet 36". If the fridge is 36", I'm left with an awkward 6" of leftover space. I could make the cabinet which houses the return 18", but this pushes the fridge more against the corner....See MoreKitchen Remodel......Help and Opinions Wanted PLEASE... : )
Comments (13)I disagree that there is such a thing as "too much" wood. I personally love the look of wood floors throughout and actively dislike carpeting (in part because I have allergies). Wood floors thoughout a house gives a continuous flow to the areas and creates a more unified feel, IMHO. I generally dislike the look of tile kitchens abutting wood/carpet living/family rooms. It just looks too chopped up for my taste. That said, I just saw an amazing combination of stone, wood and carpeting over in the flooring forum. One poster -- chiefneil - who has impeccable taste, ran a border of dark wood flooring thoughout his house and did insets of different materials in different rooms. I think the reason I liked this way of doing it is that the wood is still the unifying element that gives a cohesive look. Check out the photo's of chiefneil's floors (there are a couple) Here is a link that might be useful: flooring...See MoreHelp with remodel .. opinions on bedrooms please
Comments (7)live wire oak is probably right for modern homes... but personally I think it depends on the location. In neighborhoods full of small capes (lots of them here in Maine!) those would be sizeable bedrooms; and in neighborhoods where larger families need to live on smaller incomes (read: smaller houses) then what you're proposing might make perfect sense. But if all the other hosues are new-build, big American houses, maybe not. Our house is a 50's house and all the spaces are small compared to new builds. Then the PO added a master suite in the 90's that wasn't very well thought out. The master bedroom was long and skinny: 13.5 feet wide by about 25' long. It was really difficult to configure furniture in there, just felt strange. So we chopped the end of it off and made it into a home office (or very small bedroom/nursery). It actually feels a lot more "right" in the context of the scale of the rest of the house. FWIW, we came from a 1920's house where bedrooms were about 11 x 10 or smaller. So the 12 x 14 and 13.5 x 14.5 bedrooms we have now seem quite luxurious. Then again, we also lived on a 38' sailboat for 2 years, so I might not be the right person to ask ;)...See MoreDoes plugmold affect backsplash install height?
Comments (12)a2gemini-You are a wealth of timely information! You're kitchen is beautiful. I found a thread where you put up plugmold photos, and am linking it below. I will talk with my electrician on placement (I also have frameless cabs, with a 3/4" light rail). I think I see how they go with other pictures too, and should be able to avoid install problems. I also found a discussion and photos by you on Bulthaup birch drawer organizers. Really nice quality. There is a Bulthaup store near me so I'll go and take a look. Thanks for helping me out on this matter. Hope the electrician tries hard to minimize plugmold sighting as well as proximity to BS.
