Both rooms would be too small by today's standards. 12 x 12 is considered on the small side for a child's bedroom anymore, although some 1950's homes had 10 x 10 child's bedrooms. That was then. Sharing a single door would be extremely problematic as well. You could conceivably have a larger bedroom and a smaller office or use the room to add to an adjacent bath. It just doesn't break up well into bedroom(s) . And, bedrooms must contain closets to be bedrooms. Cabines don't count.

Presumably you're thinking of this to add value to your home. This wouldn't do it. Time to examine the whole floor to see if a different allocation of space would work better.

live wire oak is probably right for modern homes... but personally I think it depends on the location. In neighborhoods full of small capes (lots of them here in Maine!) those would be sizeable bedrooms; and in neighborhoods where larger families need to live on smaller incomes (read: smaller houses) then what you're proposing might make perfect sense. But if all the other hosues are new-build, big American houses, maybe not.

Our house is a 50's house and all the spaces are small compared to new builds. Then the PO added a master suite in the 90's that wasn't very well thought out. The master bedroom was long and skinny: 13.5 feet wide by about 25' long. It was really difficult to configure furniture in there, just felt strange. So we chopped the end of it off and made it into a home office (or very small bedroom/nursery). It actually feels a lot more "right" in the context of the scale of the rest of the house.

FWIW, we came from a 1920's house where bedrooms were about 11 x 10 or smaller. So the 12 x 14 and 13.5 x 14.5 bedrooms we have now seem quite luxurious. Then again, we also lived on a 38' sailboat for 2 years, so I might not be the right person to ask ;)

thanks. the home was built in 1990 and we are in a beach community where lots are small and limited. The main problem is moving any other walls as the wall where the doors are in the picture has a beam above it which supports the second floor so options are limited.

live_wire_oak must be kidding, because in most house plans I've seen that are of houses less than 3000sqft, those would be quite large children's rooms.

In fact, we looked at a bunch of houses before we bought this one, which is the oldest we looked at, and the ones built in the 1980s-late 1990s all had at least one child's bedroom that was less than 11x11. And we only looked at places that had over 2400 square feet.

Personally, I think 11.5x11.5 is just dandy, while 10x10 is definitely small. 11x11 is on the edge. 12x12 is nicely spacious, and anything larger than 12x14 for a child either has an included playroom, is meant for more than one kid, or is a waste.

My Seattle suburban home from 1980, 2100 sf, has a bedroom that is 8x11. It's a favorite room because the window is big and it seems so airy. I wanted it for a study, but my son chose it over a bigger room.

Thirty years later, he now owns a 400k house originally built with a 12x12 master and a 8x10 2nd bedroom.

In my experience there are a lot more really small bedrooms around that big ones - just like there are a lot of smaller houses in big urban areas.

If I needed the space as bedrooms. I would do it in a heartbeat.
Maybe it will teach the occupants to choose wisely with material things.
