Laundry in upstairs closet - should I move it?
Comments (4)On of the deciding factors in choosing the specific model we chose when shopping for a new home was whether it had a laundry on the second floor (where the bedrooms are). The superior layout of our model along with the laundry made the decision. The only home we like better had the laundry in the basement and that was its death-mark. If you're doing hockey equipment it makes total sense to have an additional machine. That idea seems like the perfect Male solution as well, so I'm surprised your husband didn't agree. The laundered items ideally should stay on the same plane they're used in. So that means clothes near the bedrooms and sports stuff on the main floor so you don't have to cart them up or down. Makes perfect sense to me. And if you're happy with the performance of a top loader, you can get another cheap one for downstairs or move the one you have now and get a nicer front loader for upstairs with higher speed spin and some other bells and whistles like delayed start. Comments (4)I just purchased the front loading KENMORE ELITE HE5t series washer & dryer. I had the original KENMORE ELITE and a Maytag Neptune. I LOVED the upper dryer of my Maytag. It was huge but had the top "dryer" that worked perfectly for sweaters and delicates. After several repairs the bottom regular dryer was starting to cost too much to repair so I gave in and splurged on a new one. It took a lot of searching and I ended up with Kenmore's from Sears. The pedestal units work great with this new batch...they don't vibrate. There are a lot more choices for laundry, as well. The washer and dryer drums are huge. I am still in heaven with the fact that my dryer is keeping pace with my washing machine...the clothes are drying so nicely. I still miss my Maytag UPPER dryer...but am learning to hang clothing again....See Morexpost, moving washer dryer to upstairs 2nd flr bathrm
Comments (3)One thing to consider when having a 2nd floor laundry is the vibration caused by the washer. Is your main floor wooden joists or are you on a slab? If you have joists, then you may already be aware of this potential issue. One thing I would do under the current shower is reinforce the floor. sister the joists in the area and add blocking between them. Just my suggestion. I'm not a pro....See MoreMoving washer/dryer from basement to 2nd floor master bath?
Comments (13)We did it in our old Victorian house for pennies. We turned a closet in the bathroom that was behind the tub (!!!) into a laundry closet with a stackable. Complete DIY job and I would definitely do it again. Our only "problem" was that the pipes up there couldn't handle the flow of water as fast as it came out of the washer. So the draining washer water backed up into the bathtub, which filled with about 6 inches of dirty water during a load until draining out. It never caused the tub to look dirty or left a ring or anything. We just lived with it as a quirk and I absolutely LOVED not having to lug clothes up and down to the yucky old basement via the yucky old non-standard basement stairs. The draining is something to really understand before you start demolishing your setup. We had no problem selling that house--everyone wants convenient laundry access and no one cared about the draining into the tub thing in this Victorian town. The hardest part was getting the stackable up the curving Victorian stairs. My husband and his friend almost toppled and killed themselves doing that. Just make sure you have a disaster plan in place--as for any 2nd floor laundry-- if something breaks or overflows, you don't want water all over going into the ceiling of the floor below. Use the best fittings that last (no plastic), the tray, etc.....See MoreRelated Professionals
