help choosing a chair or two to go with sofa

Hi,

I need some help, I am having a new house built and have a brown recliner sofa and this rug. To be placed in front of a large rock fireplace (similar rock below - 20 ft fireplace with dark wood beam mantle and dark wood floors) . I have always loved mid-century and this recliner sofa is NOT :(.. Question: does anyone think the white chairs could be used by the sofa ? Or do I need the typical white stuffed arm chairs ? Thank you in advance!

Go with all the MCM you love and hope the sofa wears out quickly so you can replace it.

I like the chair, but think it would look too "light" (in color and size) to work with your couch. It seems like the decor and proportions of your room will dictate slightly heavier pieces and white doesn't work with the couch or rug. If you can, consider switching out your rug also.

Something like this, but upholstered in fabric.

This might work...

Thanks again, all you "holics"!! I'm just going to have to toss a coin when I get to the sale, I guess! I think I will really try to get the "Titanic" for sure, because my large barrel of "Sum of All" is just pathetic after the "fake-out" Spring we had. I didn't lose it or count it in my losses but it sure looks bad. I'm thinking to replace SOA with "Titanic", since it is thought to be the best of the sports of S&S! Of course, I will divide it to be sure I have some of it if we have another premature Spring in the next few years. I do have a spot in a raised bed around our deck that will accomodate it, since removing one of my "Francee" and putting "Gunsmoke" in another location! Thank you all, for your great advice! It's hopeless isn't it--there will never be many hosta we will be able to pass up if we have the wherewithal to acquire them!!! janice

Hmm. I'd sleep on it. See what bugs you more/draws you more. Go with your intuition. Put it in different spots. Look at it in different lights-morning, day, artificial lighting. Stop looking at them for several hours-and then look some more. Not easy I know. I choose my current flooring for a week minimum..gosh I was so silly I even took it next to my face and looked at both of us-me and floor sample lol-in the mirror..to see whether it flatters my complexion)) In the end I chose well, I love it. I'd say I love it madly. But to tell you the truth-if I picked something else, I'd probably like it too..) Because most of all I loved some flooring that we ordered-and were told it was discontinued. I had to choose again. I was so upset! Fast forward six years-I don't even remember what that first love of mine was..

I think you'll get better advice showing a picture of the space and size of room. Wall and floor color makes a difference. Nice pieces so far! Any colors you like, or looking for a neutral calm space? Do you have any art already?

I deleted my posts due to no response. Also, I skimmed through your other post and I notice your Mom is 91. And, there is very little, to no indication of what your Mom would prefer here. I would encourage you to keep any new rug in the same colorway as your Mom’s present rug - with the warm brown tones PLUS REDS in the rug. Alternatively, maybe just get her present rug cleaned... It’s a nice rug. You can look into environmentally friendly ”green” type of cleaning services. And why not just let her keep her current wall art ? Art is really a very personal thing. If she loves the art - just leave it. It’s her space. To “lighten up” the space - and only if your Mom is open to the idea - maybe add a floor lamp.

Often sofas like yours just overwhelm chairs like the one pictured. I'd consider the height and overall presence of the MCM style pieces you want to introduce,keeping the scale close....meaning the seat heights need to be about the same and the overall height within just a couple of inches. Good news is that those chairs (& similar) do come in various sizes and various fabrics. I'd likely choose a stronger colour, or if ivory something very textured.

I think a beige velour accent chair set would go with the brown leather
so far I'm thinking the rug is a bad choice though...
