Japanese Iris - Does Foliage Hold Up Like Siberian Iris?
Comments (5)I'm in zone 7 Maryland, for me Siberians start blooming the middle of May, a week to two weeks earlier than the Japanese Iris. The foliage of Japanese iris is overall more subtantial than that of Siberians. The leaf is wider and thicker, and has a fat, rigid mid-rib that keeps it from being floppy. It also stays a nice medium green the whole season (not as dark a green as Siberians). If your Siberian foliage held up well for you, there should be no problem with the Japanese. I have actually left the foliage on the whole winter some years and it was a quite attractive gray-brown, standing tall until I cut it down in February or March. They (at least my Japanese iris) set a lot of seed, and the pods are also attractive. Letting them go to seed hasn't seemed to affect the amount of bloom I get year to year. Sometimes I deadhead, sometimes I don't. But, unless you are particularly interested in seeing the results of genetic recombination, make sure to remove the seed pods before they start to split open - three or four years ago I didn't and I'm still getting seedlings all over the place. One of the seedlings was actually quite lovely (I somehow missed it weeding, and it got to blooming size), having gotten a deep purple color and flat, round form from one parent and a stripe/stippling pattern from another, so I kept it; the rest have gone to the compost pile... - Steve...See MoreWondering what a YELLOW Culinarian looks like?
Comments (5)Thanks for your interest. Maire cate, I posted pictures of the kitchen in progress on the Kitchen Forum site. I have been calling it an Unconventional Kitchen. The kitchen is in a house that has evolved over time. The first two rooms were built in 1785, then addition in 1902, then 1986, then 1994 and now, in 2011. The 2011 changes are starkly modern. The kitchen sits between the old and the new and is quite open. The cupboards are painted several colors - pantry wall is Cosmos blue, the hutch is Chinese red, the base cabinets are two shades of gray, etc, etc. There is a huge stone fireplace with fireboxes that face the kitchen and dining rooms. The countertops are stainless steel, soapstone, and end grain cherry, depending on the area. So it is an eclectic space. I just got a chance to really look at the range today and I noticed two botches in the enamel inside the oven door. Darn! I will post a pic and seek your advice on how to handle this....See MoreLooks like culinary Sage, flowers look like yellow umbrellas

Comments (7)regardless of the undertones in the paint color, you have to take into consideration the natural AND artificial lighting in any room. not to mention the furnishings in the room, everything plays a role. ... are you sure the sample matches the paint you purchased?...See MoreBlueberryBundtcake - 6a/5b MA
