Need advice - new/expensive curtains look BLAH!
Comments (52)Lisa, you didn't mention if you want to add some some complementary color or stay with your existing color scheme. If you want to do the latter, the room actually has a lot of different fairly dark and/or cool colors in large masses -- beige (walls), blue and dark brown (curtains), dark and light gray (sectional, ottoman, rug), and dark brown/black iron (coffee table and curtain rods, table lamp). There’s also no pattern and little texture. If you want to add some sparkle, eliminate one color, and help tie the disparate elements together, I’d consider replacing at least some of the dark/iron elements with silver ones. I can’t tell if the round wall hanging is sparkly. A few ideas: Especially if you stay with the blues and grays, take Ingrid's suggestion about a chair by the window. Maybe something like this from Ballard, You don’t need a lot of pillows, just a few, maybe a pair of one and one of another; these are all from Etsy at TheHomeCentric, Pier 1 mirror, PB coffee table, PB table lamp, And PB has pewter and polished nickel curtain hardware. Or, to better tie in the brown from the curtains, instead of silver use warm brass and bronzy elements, like this PB mirror, And Ballard has brass curtain hardware…...See MoreRoller shades? Comments (30)Becky - don't know if you remember my room and link from up-thread but I've continued to follow your situation and thought I'd give you an update on mine since we have similar large, private settings and goals for views. Much as I love roman shades whether fabric or some kind of woven wood/bamboo, I just didn't want to cover up that much glass with the stack height. We did a test run with a textured roller shade on 2 windows in our living room. That way if we hated them it wasn't an investment in every window and we'd keep looking. Here's what we have, a roller shade behind a cassette. You can see the texture, it's not room darkening but offers excellent light/glare control and privacy. When they're open, they are very unobtrusive and leave the glass bare. The cassettes aren't invisible but if you match your wood they will disappear as much as anything can. Mine are in between my wall and my wood color so they have a bit of warmth to them. We are probably going to use these throughout the house where we need light control. Some of those windows may get additional decoration with curtains, and that's an opportunity to add some pattern and color. Personally, I don't think these have a modern look or really any definitive style look because I chose a neutral to basically disappear. If you chose a wood tone or a color of course they will be a focal point and that to me is where the clean lined modern look comes in. But as a first layer with curtains or even on their own matched to your wood, IMO they can work with any home or decorating style. Hope that helps. It's a tough decision and a lot of money, that's for sure!...See MoreOpen concept/pale oak : Want to add Accent wall thinking : Wickham Gry
Comments (13)Actually I did think about that as a layout but do not like have blocked bulky and have no openings to get into the living room but one. and i see that the couch (smaller) is pulled out into the slider. That brings it 3 feet from the dining room. We are talking the ability to walk around it 3 ft and maybe a small console (I have seen this with smaller scalled furniture) It is super tight. If I do Italian leather and get lower furniture so you can see past it and it has and open feeling which I am thinking of changing It might work but I want to keep it looking open and when you look at the back of the couch coming from a kitchen which is 6ft away . It cannot be a high back couch in my oppinion. But yes this layout might be a possibility. I appreciate your input...See MoreAdvice for curtains. These look like a movie theater screen cover. Ugh
Comments (10)Thank you (all) for offering advice. A few follow up questions: 1. About the FP mantle decor - The area is limited to space (traded mantle for TV mount) and scarf is my feeble attempt to bring the color black into a room that lacked color. I'm excited to swap it out if it's working against the room. 2. The windows next to the FP - I like the idea of roman shades for them - I'll look into that. I had tried the curtain panels here first bc I felt the TV is really tall - the curtains are at that height to soften the lines. But, if they are too much - I'll move them over to the big wall. 3. The grand wall - is it ok that the curtain rods are divided into 3 and curtains will have the sconces peeking out from between them? We use those sconces every night. I had a Interior Designer here back in January. She was perplexed by these windows, but said that if I use ceiling height custom drapes - I should take the lights out, which I'm hesitant to do. 4. I am on the hunt for a blanket ladder - height and storage for the (literal) mound of blankets that are out of view (intentionally, bc they are mis-matched) thanks again,...See Moresbeitels
