My name, Your rose has something totally different. It's called a rosy gall. Seems to be a more northern problem than southern US. a good wiki page with photos I don't agree with which roses get it (in my garden it was all over R. eglanteria), and it sapped the strength of the plant. They don't add anything good to your roses, and If it were mine, I'd at least remove the gall and kill the bugs inside.

Thanks gals, I'm pretty sure that I got it at a cutting at Ricky's swap. I tried searching but all I kept coming up with was the power puff plant which I also have so I knew it wasn't that :-) It is pretty but has no smell at all to the flower.

Slowly I am going around with my chain saw cutting off access of these vines to the ground. Basically, because the vines are very thick and extend far up the trees, I cut out a chunk and sprayed both ends with the roundup. I could not find concentrated roundup anywhere so am just using the spray indicated for poison ivy etc. When I am done I am going to drill holes into the "stumps" and pour stump remover into them. I think I may be upsetting my neighbor lady. She says that she hired a professional tree person who told her that the vines are not dangerous to the tree. Her trees are also covered with the winter creeper, and the wild grape which is covering three trees on my property is hers...and she likes it and thinks it is pretty. I am the new person here and I have no desire to cause problems. I am willing to endure the stares at my trees with chunks cut out but won't push for the grape vine removal....yet.

tlbean2004, I totally know what you mean, I make some strange posts out of boredom, or wanting a totally new point of view. I agree with the genetics answer, but, I have seen more American hollies with 3-4 trunks than single trunks, but the shape is the same, anyhow. I will mention though, that sometimes trees do seem to take on a different growth pattern, or at least seem to in youth. I have 2 Quercus Robur (English oak) trees I started from seed (acorn) from the same tree. One is short and has wildly growing branches and a "general dissarray" of growth. The other acorn brought forth a tree that is more upright, and nearly 3X the height of the "general dissarray" seedling. This taller tree is very balanced and near perfectly formed oak, shaped tree. In the distant future, maybe they will look more the same, but now there is a real noticable difference. On a funnier comparison, I don't watch the Kardashians, but anyone could notice, nobody but Kim has that kinda tushie. It was a random genetic thing, it coulda came from her great grama, who knows. I don't see any other girls in the family sportin that much junk in the trunk. poaky1
