Comments (9)I grow both eupatorium maculatum and eupatorium purpureum. (I dont have any e. fistulosum, yet.) The e. purpureum (sweet joe pye weed) grows well in shade. I agree with Janet E, that the sweet joe pye weed flowers are more "grayish pink", less bright than the other eupatoriums. but that is common for "shade" type plants, their colors tend to be less vibrant. another good plant you may want to consider (that JanetE also listed) is veronicastrum virginicum (culvers root) it grows in shade and complements the eupatorium quite nicely. in the sun it can get quite tall. but in the shade is grows shorter and the flower heads tend to be more dainty than what many pictures show. If you decide to try woodland sunflower, i would be careful to dead head flowers so it doesnt take over. but in complete shade it will be harder for it to be as aggressive. and it does like "a little sun" it tends to grow on woodland edges. another suggestion would be some asters that like shade, white woodland aster (aster divaricatus) or arrow leaved aster (a. saggitifolius). I grow the white woodland aster, and it blooms nicely in the shade....See MoreI know I am being a fuddy-duddy, but.....

Since when did high-lighting fat become a fashion trend? I was at a luncheon the other day where one lady (around my age -60)showed up wearing a stretchy glittery red sweater that showed every fat cell on her torso, a short pleated skirt that looked like a skating skirt from the 60's and black tights and ankle boots. Believe me she would have looked far better in torn jeans and a loose top that didn't show all. It was hard for me not to stare and I know this gal. Then there are the older fat women with cleavage and crepe like skin. But even though they look silly to me I don't care as long as they are good people. I remember back in the 90's DS had friends that wore nothing but surplus cargo pants. No matter where they went. Turned out several were extremely wealthy dot commers who hit the boom. The guy in the suit? He worked retail at barely above minimum wage. Don't judge a book by it's cover. The only clothing I am really bothered by are when mothers treat their little children like dress up dolls, dressing them up, fussing with their hair, painting their nails etc. I feel sorry for those kids. I am not talking about special occasions but the constant fussing. It especially annoys me to see little girls dressed in ways that don't allow them the freedom to run, play and climb. I find it very sad and I wonder what this generation of fussed over tutued little (at least the ones who won't have the sense to rebel later) will grow up to be....See Moreclimbers near Rome must be in pot, impossible?
Comments (8)Portland has a few nice gardens. One, not too dramatic in the flower catergory, is the Japanese Garden just on the edge of the city center. The Rose Garden is across the parking from the entrance to the Japanese Garden. One garden (you should keep these streets on record) is on a section of Military Lane off Macadam Avenue, overlooking the Willamette River about 2 miles south of downtown, it's called the Garden of the Bishop's Close. The natural scenery is fairly impressive around here for the wild areas. Mt. Hood National Forest is about 1 hour east of Portland. One way to go there, is to drive east through the Columbia River Gorge to Hood River city, and go south behind Mt. Hood, tallest peak in Oregon, only all year skiing in the USA I recall. That's lost lake at the base of Mt. Hood. With the gorge route, it's possible to stop at Mulnomah falls which is 20 minutes from the east side of Portland: It's about 3 hours to see Crater Lake far down south, but I'm not sure if it's worth the drive unless you plan to see more of the state. That's a lake in the top of a volcanic crater, with a small volcanic cone in the center. Portland is nice to visit, but if you come to Portland, it's Oregon that make the visit. This is a state to visit from May to September to really enjoy the green and get some warm weather. The coast is famous for scenery - here's one beach in Seaside, about 1 hour west. And on the way there, about 7 miles shy of Seaside, is this largest Sitka spruce in the USA, there is a sign. The tree is maybe 300 feet off the highway. On the way there, try eating at Camp 18 restaurant, a logging museum style restaurant - largest ridge pole in US. It has old machinery outside in the parking lot, and inside. Huge meals. It's in a forest community next to a small river. Before I forget, there is a very large new garden - the OREGON GARDEN, in Silverton, about 1.5 hours south of Portland. It is the new major garden of the state. Young, but nice. You can find it on www.google.com for sure. Some people like to "hop" north into Washington to see Mt. St. Helens which blew it's top about 1980. Visible from Portland. Comments (17)Want those colors? Exactly?!!? Go into your towns real estate database. Home ownership is public record. You will find the home, and the name of the current owners. Send a greeting card with a note, enclose a S.A.S.E! and a note . " I fell in love with your paint colors. .......I would be absolutely thrilled if you could share them. " Put a little gift card in there too. Nothing big, A couple Starbucks, a local wine shop. or something. Then pray. Does this work? Yes it does. In 2010, while searching for a perfect stone for a custom build, I came across a Georgian in Greenwich CT. Two hours of digging, and I had the name of the owner. I sent a gorgeous Christmas card with GC to a local wine, described my plight, and waxed on as to the beauty of her home. I got an E-mail with the info. I promptly called the BEST floral shop in Greenwich, sent a very expensive tussie mussie type arrangement in thanks. We ended up choosing a different stone after we drove five hours each way to see our "coveted" in person. However....: ) ....why wade through a thread of guesses, and then buy forty sample pots? Why DO that? lol PS.......... forget the realtor hon......that futile. Spell it. F.U.T.I.L.E...See More- 5 years ago
