climbers near Rome must be in pot, impossible?

I have a very nice house in S. Lazio but the walls need softening with some climbers, problem is the house is surrounded by paving. What evergreen or other climbers would succeed and how big should the pot be?

Me again, I always seem to be replying to you! I have about 40 different varieties of Passion Flower and most of them are in pots (30cm diameter by 30cm high). Quite a few of them are over 5 metres high. Also have snail(corkskrew) vine in a pot (can send you seeds if you like) and Thunbergia Grandiflora doing well in slighly larger pots. Lots of people round here grow the normal jasmine in pots too. With pots you must water more frequently and remember to fertilize more often in the growing season. Have also grown morning glory, Ipomea alba (lovely scent at night) and loofah in pots. Neighbours have stephanotis and bouganvilla but the latter is a bit naf - it really needs more root space to become rampant and show of its glory. I don't have it as its a pain in the ...... when dropping its flowers and all hell to prune!

i did succesfully take of some of the pavement and had plants in the holes__ easier when you think that it is quite hot in summer in rome, and that you might forget to water!!

I sold my house yesterday and put an offer on a house about two weeks ago so I see selling and buying from two perspectives. First, as a seller, you don't want to spend money for a house you are leaving. But, if you would rearrange your furniture a bit, take down the wall paper, also add a few decorative accessories-not a bunch of little things, but a few well placed bigger things with real impact. Also, I like you drapes, but modern buyers would consider that a bit dated. Everything now a days is sheer, light open etc. I got sheer material from Walmart and made simple drapes-$1.00 a yard. They look great-like silk. If you don't sew, you can use glue. Add a few flowers to your yard. A buyer wants to just move in these days. As a buyer, I was looking for a clean house, I didn't want to take on a bunch of projects. I wanted move in ready. I am not your normal buyer as I am willing to replace carpeting, paint etc. My new family room has hideous wood paneling, but I still bought it. The price was right. In a more expensive house I would have requested that the sellers provide a bit of money for this. I don't know if you are pricing aggressively or trying to get top dollar that makes a difference too. Watch designed to sell, they have great tips. I don't mean the crazy stuff-ripping out bathrooms, but furniture arrangement, accessories etc.

Our thoughts on IKEA products.... We read a lot, went to a lot of showrooms and got quotes on a broad range of things. We are not strangers to the building/renovating process having redone four previous residences and three retail stores, as well as building two new stores from scratch. The prices we got from some of the kitchen places shocked us. None of the showrooms we visited had workamnship equal to that of the cabinetry we have in our shops - yet the prices were higher. While I understand the high cost of providing good customer service, and the fact that this cost must be built in to the retail price of cabinet lines, I honestly believe that there is a lot of greed out there and hope that it is geting blown away in the current economic storm. There are three things we have learnt about renovating/building and ourselves over the years: Renovations never, ever cost what they are supposed to. Borrowing money to renovate a residence is a really bad idea. We are always going to make change$ along the way. So we decided to use IKEA cabinets. We are ending up with a combination of white painted (not thermofoil) and oak veneered finishes with self-closing doors and drawers equipped with dampers. If we get bored of the colour or finish it's easy to have them redone or replaced. The interior options for the drawers and cabinets are more extensive than any other manufacturer's line, and if somehow we need more, there are all the Rev-a-shelf products. The boxes are good particle board. After having had water damage in one of our shops, we will never use anything but particle board for cabinets again. Our taste does not run to the stark, modern look so we'll dress the cabinetry up with mouldings, corbels, etc. and change the glass in the door frames. You can do that with with Ikea more easily than with any preassembled cabinet. Ikea's guarantee is 25 years. At our age that's almost(but not quite!) a lifetime gurantee. To compare: - we went to a mid-range cabinetry firm and received a quote of just over $60,000 for the kitchen section of our main floor. This was Cabinetry, mouldings and interior fittings without installation. They estimated installation at 3 to 5 thousand. We purchased cabinetry from Ikea for the same area with the same interior fittings for just under $10,000.00 We spent another $3,400.00 on corbels, light rail, legs, etc. In our area, IKEA has installers who will come and assemble and install things for $40.00 per linear foot. That would be about $1,200 for us. Finish carpentry would be another $3,000.00 or so. The biggest benefit though - outside of the fact that we are saving money - is that we have changed our layout about five hundred and fifty times, and gone back to Ikea to exchange cabinets about four hundred of those times. No Problem ! No Charge ! When I look at someone's kitchen cabinets the things I notice are the colours and the detailing. Most of the time I never see the inside of the cabinets and when I do I'm usually concentrating on the contents rather than the cabinet walls. What makes or breaks a room for me are gorgeous handles and pulls, lighting, trim, colours, countertops, floors and architectural detailing. I buy good quality items but I look for intrinsic value there too. But all of those things though are secondary to how much I enjoy myself in the space. I remember the wine and the conversation long after I remember anything else. So on a reno project that recently edged its way into six figures we chose to use Ikea. We could have paid the prices the other companies were asking without hardship, but every time I looked at the kitchen I would have felt like I had overpaid. I don't want to deal with that for 25 years.

It's funny how when growing Multiples of the same roses 1 will do so much better. I have found 1 side of my garden is on steroids and the other 1 is just normal. It makes it hard to judge a rose. That is very sweet flowers. I'm so happy with my friend's garden especially the fact that he is thrilled with it! He has neighbors come over to see it and they just cannot get over it! The difference in his yd in 1 year is astounding! Did you see the pics i posted on another thread on Peggy Martin. Im helping clear out his old house since he sold it to his next door neighbor. Hoarding is bad. He just wants to throw everything, bu he has the best stuff. So sad. His 1848 log cabin( lived in by Henry Harris) was awesome not too long ago. Now it's a tear down 😥 We're working on the kitchen at his new place trying to decide what stuff of his to keep. DH is ruthless. The pandemic has really helped him go cold turkey on buying so I think hes off on a better track and now he has an increasingly beautiful house and yard to spend time in.

On the subject of nurseries. My experience of nurseries is years old and may not still be valid, but, way back in 2006, Nino San Remo had the most confused offerings of old roses I've ever seen in any nursery. They may have improved, and also I don't know about their modern offerings. The plants were always good, just way too frequently the wrong variety. La Campanella has new owners and I don't know whether they know their stuff, but in its day, La Campanella was one of the best rose nurseries anywhere, particularly for once-flowering old roses, of which the nursery offered many rare varieties. I hope the new management keeps up the high level of quality. I've heard good things about S'Orrosa but have never ordered from them. About the varieties under discussion here, I don't have much to say. The Bourbons and I don't get along, though I have 'Louise Odier' and am rather fond of it, though it doesn't do well for me. This is probably my fault, poor soil preparation, not the rose's. Mine doesn't rebloom, however, like bart bart; I don't water after the first year. One thing to mention about LO: she has quite ornamental hips, large, glossy red-orange, with persistent black sepals. Of course the gardener must resist the temptation to deadhead, and probably be willing to renounce a second flowering I don't recall LO being particularly prone to blackspot. A thought: would you Italian gals be interesting in a cutting exchange next fall, perhaps in October? I need to get back to propagation. Cuttings can be sent through the mail: I used to exchange quite a few this way, and got a good many roses as a result. I think I would be particularly interested in Teas and Chinas. Let me know what you think.

Hey people in the North, here in the South (Down Under) we have a beaut bougainvillea called bambino, it does not grow more than 1.5m and is recommendended for pots, I have one that I trained as a climber. I only cut off the long canes that start to grow thorns otherwise it stays compact. The hotter and sunnier the position the more it flowers. I wonder whether it is available in Europe?

The thread title was interesting.

Before clicking to enter, I thought you were referring to mountain climbers wandering into a concealed patch of marijuana (slang "pot") up in the hills.

And here you are talking about climbing vines planted in pots.

Dear arborist of Oregon - very amusing. As most of the locals when out for a walk carry a shotgun I am glad they are generally not in pot, however advice about plants would be very gratefully received. Incidentally I believe Portland Oregon is a real nice city, must make it my next US city to visit, any really nice gardens there?

Portland has a few nice gardens. One, not too dramatic in the flower catergory, is the Japanese Garden just on the edge of the city center.

One garden (you should keep these streets on record) is on a section of Military Lane off Macadam Avenue, overlooking the Willamette River about 2 miles south of downtown, it's called the Garden of the Bishop's Close.

The natural scenery is fairly impressive around here for the wild areas. Mt. Hood National Forest is about 1 hour east of Portland. One way to go there, is to drive east through the Columbia River Gorge to Hood River city, and go south behind Mt. Hood, tallest peak in Oregon, only all year skiing in the USA I recall.

That's lost lake at the base of Mt. Hood. With the gorge route, it's possible to stop at Mulnomah falls which is 20 minutes from the east side of Portland:

It's about 3 hours to see Crater Lake far down south, but I'm not sure if it's worth the drive unless you plan to see more of the state.That's a lake in the top of a volcanic crater, with a small volcanic cone in the center.

Portland is nice to visit, but if you come to Portland, it's Oregon that make the visit. This is a state to visit from May to September to really enjoy the green and get some warm weather. The coast is famous for scenery - here's one beach in Seaside, about 1 hour west.

And on the way there, about 7 miles shy of Seaside, is this largest Sitka spruce in the USA, there is a sign. The tree is maybe 300 feet off the highway.

On the way there, try eating at Camp 18 restaurant, a logging museum style restaurant - largest ridge pole in US. It has old machinery outside in the parking lot, and inside. Huge meals. It's in a forest community next to a small river.

Before I forget, there is a very large new garden - the OREGON GARDEN, in Silverton, about 1.5 hours south of Portland.

It is the new major garden of the state. Young, but nice. You can find it on www.google.com for sure.
