Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

Need help with open concept kitchen/dining room lighting

Help!!! I am in the process of remodeling my kitchen which will now be open to the dining room and im really struggling with how to make the lighting cohesive between both.

The first picture attached is the rendering Of my kitchen.

The second picture attached is a picture of the island pendents that I absolutely love (love the whole style of this kitchen actually)

The pendents are chrome. What do I use as the dining room fixturE? Does it have to be chrome as well? Since the pendents make a statement in struggling to figure out what would compliment them nicely.

Open to any advice or suggestions

I have open concept with an island with a sink and after reading many threads here I scratched my plan to have clear glass and went with ribbed glass and a lens which spreads the light downward. You’ll need good lighting at the sink. Your inspiration pic has a large skylight and no sink in the island. I would not do a lantern type.

Where is your dining room. Would it be the space from where the perspective originates? If it is, you could use a different color/material since there is some space separation with the wall opening. I would also repeat the chosen color/materials in another way in the decor of the DR.

Part of the pendants will get cut off visually by your beam. I would get a stunning back splash and let that be your statement piece. I would not clutter the view into your kitchen with pendants. Use recessed lights.

Inspiration photos are a great starting point, but some of the elements don't always work in other spaces.

Spend the money on the back splash and an amazing dining room chandelier.

Mike, you have a nice space there. Lots of light and plenty of cabinets for a first home! I think with a good paint job, your cabinets will look very nice. My only suggestion is that if budget allows, you do the floor after the paint job (less prep of the floors!). However, if there is only enough money for one of the three at this time, I think you are right in doing the floors before moving in. Rantontoo's point about the floor being raised is a valid one. I am sure the installers will tear out the laminate, but nonetheless make sure there is enough room under the dishwasher. You could box it in and then if it ever needs to be removed, ruin your new floors (pre or site finished). Also today's refrigerators are super sized and with a new floor, there could be a height issue as well.

I will look to see if I have a floor plan, but if not, how would i go about creating one for you. I know I sound like an idiot but obviously I am clueless as to this kind of stuff and wish my husband would just let me hire a decorator lol! However, he just now gave me another big fat NO to hiring one lol! So needless to say, I am going to have to learn how to do this on my own and asking for help, however annoying I may be, is the only thing I know to do! So I apologize in advance for my ignorance! I will look for the floor plan! Thanks for responding!

I would start out with a large, beautiful rug in warm colors (terracotta or red Oriental rug mixed with other colors. I feel sectionals often confine you in how to organize your room. I would choose a fabric couch in a neutral, not too dark color (not gray, which is on its way out and not a warm color), and add two chairs in a different color or at least a different material and style. Try to keep the height of these pieces similar. Two end tables in wood (they don't have to be the same, but make sure the heights are fairly similar and a metal and glass coffee table would look great, with table lamps or floor lamps even if you have overhead lighting, which is always harsh. Pick colors from the rug for pillows and you'll have a beautifully coordinated living space. Books, good paintings and some tall plants will add warmth and personality to your room. People too often don't add these elements and then wonder why their rooms look bare and cold. This may be more colorful than you want to go. and this is a small rug because there is carpeting underneath, but it gives you the idea of neutral furniture and how it can be made more lively with accessories, pillows, coffee table styling etc.

hmmm, I dont want to sound rude, but, as a lighting person, it seems nutzo that you didnt change the lighting plan. I see you do use the fan which I understand. But that blaring can shining at the person siting at the head of the table........not good. and the one that is blaring down on the person that sits on the end of the sofa also not good. On top of that, who needs two can lights shining into the tv over the fire place?? Man who ever installed this should have brought these things to light (no pun intended.) I would add two more can lights and one light for over the dining table. Then I would replace the fan with one that has no lights and is all white or cream to blend away and be a touch on the modern side. The table, (yes to a rug) will fit just fine in line with the sliding doors.

That's a very interesting option I haven't considered. I do have recessed lighting being installed as well.

Originally we were planning on classic white subway tile. Do you have any suggestions or inspiration pics?
