Installing Door On Stairs

Currently preparing to move into a 1955 small cape cod style home. Finished attic upstairs space. The stairs come into a flex space/bedroom and then there is a full bedroom and half bath. We intend to use the flex space as a child’s bedroom but are concerned about noise because there is no door on the stairs that will go right into our main living area (LR/Kitchen/Dining). We were thinking about possibly putting in a door at the bottom of the stairs to serve as both baby proofing and noise reduction. The only problem is the door would need to be shortened and would be on top of the bottom stair. Do you think this is a reasonable idea? We are brand new to all of this but just trying to explore our options. Has anyone done something like this? I would appreciate any suggestions. I unfortunately done have a picture but hope it makes sense.
