What sized rug needed for and evenly sized L-shaped sectional?

My newly ordered sectional is 9'11 x 9'11. I have never owned a rug before. What size and shape do I need? Here is what the sectional looks like. Do you get an a square rug because the sectional is the same size on both sides.

I think that it might depend on the size and shape of your room, and where the sofa goes. Also, will you add other seats (armchair, pouf, ...)?

Right now, it's just the sectional. I would consider adding another chair in the future, I am just not sure if we will have the space.

Family room when we built the house.

Sectional will stay in the same layout as the couches.

My Flexsteel sectional has metal clips so the two pieces hook together. It's on a wood floor but it's against two walls so it's not going anywhere (it also weighs a ton). No recliners; we plan on a cat sometime soon and I once injured a cat by trapping it under the recliner when I closed it up, so I swore I would never own a recliner again. We did choose to use a larger coffee table because we needed the surface space, and the coffee table that had fit the regular couch just fine was too small for the sectional, both visually and functionally. Regarding measurements, our sectional sits in a corner against two walls. I simply measured the two walls and allowed a bit of space for small end tables, then hunted down a sectional that fit those measurements and wasn't too bulky for the room. Small-scale sectionals that aren't just two loveseats stuck together or a couch with a chaise stuck on (I find it very difficult to get out of the chaise) are not easy to find, but they're not ALL ginormous! Ours is something like 90" on one side of the "L" and 110" on the other. If you plan to "float" your sectional, get a roll of blue painter's tape and map out where your sectional's going to go, right on the floor with the tape, until the proportion looks right and then measure that; if you have the standard sofa-loveseat combo now you can shove them together into that space and get a rough idea of scale. The biggest "pros" in our house are that it wastes no space in our small living room - when we had a couch and loveseat, there was a substantial area in the corner that was wasted (furniture arms take up a lot of space) and we couldn't both stretch out to watch TV, read or nap while now we can and still have room for the dog. :-) The main con is that it IS a little bit heavy-looking for the small room, although cut-back arms, a relatively low back, and a slightly-bland midtone sage color do reduce the visual weight somewhat.

What about a U-shaped sectional? Or an L with an ottoman on one end (to make a U)? That way two adults can put their feet up, and the little ones can be in the middle. If you remove back cushions, they might even have enough room to slouch with a pillow. I have been more comfortable watching TV on sectionals, but I only had to share with the dogs. I did not use my curved corner sectional. I like the square corners. I had one outside, and I miss it. My sister has a super comfortable one, and I would fall asleep on it. I like that you can be in different positions on a sectional more easily than a sofa.

If your mantle and mahogany choices are staying- at least for foreseeable future- I’d get them in place first, but meanwhile “ collect “ rugs in your inspo book - some plain, some patterned. If you have kids you may not want a solid cream rug! I do love that patterned rug as it makes the floor color look great yet blends warm and cool for gray walls/ furniture and warm floors , warm wood furniture. So much more interesting and lively than gray gray gray. I tone who thinks bits of black are ok with dark brown furniture or vice versa, not all matchy, and it’s not hard to repeat a few black accents. OTOH you might find a similar rug with chocolate brown. Meanwhile if you want to play with some colors and patterns IRL you could find some pillows that are returnable and see how you’re leaning. Pillows can be found cheaply but then may be … cheap. I always try to get removable zipper covers in fabrics that feel good, can be washed, and use feather inserts ( although some folks prefer poly fills), and & try to find ones I love looking at, then I can keep pillows fresh & switch covers occasionally by storing covers themselves.

Good evening,

Thank you for the additional photos and info.

This is what I would do:

1. offset the square feel of the sectional with a round side table on the side of it,

2. put down a rectangular large rug that goes under the feet of the sectional and the maybe-chair (or pouf(s) for more flexibility and if it goes with your style) in order to create a zone and anchor your big sectional. If you have the budget and room for it, you can even go for a larger choice and have the whole sectional sit on the rug.

3. decide between these 2 options: a large rug that you are happy with as is, or a large rug as neutral possible that you then layer with one or more other colorful or textured rug(s) on top of it.

This is an approximate plan that I've made for you. I didn't have your room dimensions so I 'eyeballed' it, let me know if smthg looks a little off to you.

With a living room rug, larger is better because it makes the whole space look larger, more inviting and even more comfortable. If you're keeping the heavy wood coffee table I would offset it with a light metal and glass side table, and a round one as suggested above would be a good idea.

I notice in the pictures, the rugs hangover a little bit on the side. So if my sectional is almost 10 feet long, I guess I am going to need a larger rug then? Like at least 12 feet on both sides?? It's the size that has me stumped I guess! I would like for the whole sectional to fit on a rug, but with the floor outlets that we have, that won't be possible unless we cut holes in the rug or find another solution.

We did order this swivel chair in the navy fabric, but the plan is to put it in our reading nook which is off to the right of the living area. I am not opposed to putting it in the living space if it will work. We will see. Not a necessary purchase right now, but I want so get a couple of ottomans that I can store under the sofa table to give extra seating when necessary.

I want new occasional tables as I feel like our current ones are too traditional. Someone suggested a round coffee table, but I can't find a lift up coffee table that is round that I like. I work at the couch a lot so lift up is necessary. So here are come ideas I have.

I did find some circular small side tables I liked, but I don't know what if any of these "work."

Thank you for your guidance. I don't know how to put things together and I don't want people walking in my home and go "what was she thinking?"
