Custom vs semi custom finish for cabinets??
Comments (2)Are you using "custom" and "semi-custom" to refer to the cabinets or the finish? Custom cabinets are specifically made to measure to exactly fit your space. Semi-custom are bought pre-made and fillers are used to make the pieces fit the space. A custom finish should use hand-applied stain with attention to evening out the variations in wood tone, and covered with sprayed pre-catalyzed lacquer. I dunno about "semi custom" - maybe everything is just sprayed, without the care regarding wood tone variations....See Moredecision time: custom vs. semi custom cabs...
Comments (3)Semi-custom...Have you looked at the paint colors in your home in your light instead of just at the store? They may or may not be better there, but it's something to check. I'm curious as to why you think the Omega Dynasty do not maximize storage space...unless you're comparing framed to frameless... Our Omega Dynasty cabinets come in a range of sizes from 6" pullouts in which the cabinet is actually frameless to 31.5" wide for the oven cabinet to 36" wide under the cooktop. I was actually surprised at the range of sizes that were available in Omega's semi-custom line (Dynasty). Custom...Is there a way to bring the quote down? Maybe eliminate some of the "extras" like fake door panels on the back of an island or peninsula that has an overhang or furniture molding? Maybe cut the cost of other things to make up the difference? (E.g., get a low-end cooktop or low-end DW for now and upgrade later.) Maybe delay a backsplash for a year or two. These are some of the things we did to save on our Project. Most of our kitchen was done in July 2008 and we're only now looking into a backsplash. (Although the backsplash may have to wait yet again as we had to unexpectedly buy a new vehicle this past weekend.) Have you considered other cabinet lines?...See MorePaint Job on Custom Kitchen Cabinets vs. Semi-Custom Cabinets?
Comments (6)We used cliqstudios cabinets in 3 projects in our last house. 2 were stained wood, 1 was the painted wood (linen). The painted cabinets withstood 2 children coloring on them with non washable crayons, colored pencil, 3 cats who loved to rub their faces on the corners and a very VERY busy work area. After pricing the cliqstudios cabinets, the same kitchen in IKEA, and KountryWood Products (available through a local dealer), we've decided to go with cliqstudios again. The prices were exactly the same, IKEA doesn't come with plywood sides, they were only available as an upgrade on the KWP's and they come standard on the cliqstudios cabinets. Plus, I don't have to build the cliqstudios cabinets. As for the finished - my parents went with a VERY high end custom cabinetry company (apologies, I don't remember the name) - white painted inset shaker style - the finish on their cabinets started looking like crap within 5 years. Places where the cabinet finish has chipped, or flaked off, discoloration, etc....See MoreCustom vs Semi Custom Cabinets
Comments (11)There are a lot of factors that go into pricing that may be pushing the cost higher than anticipated. For instance, base cabinets with 3-4 drawers are typically more expensive than a standard base cabinet with 1 drawer over 2 doors. Extra details such as corbels, columns, interior rollouts, cutlery dividers, specialty hardware, etc. will all have a direct effect on the price. I would suggest getting a few quotes to compare prices. You may be able to afford a higher quality custom cabinet, depending on the size and configuration of your kitchen!...See MoreHelen
