Flooring Advice / Ideas - Mixed Tile in Living Room

I am in need of advice or suggestions from the tile and design experts. We moved into a new house in March, and most of the common areas are all one kind of tile. The living room, though, is carpet, surrounded by said tile. I need to get rid of the carpet as cheaply as possible, and I am considering just pulling it out and using some contrasting color of tile. Maybe a medium to dark gray. Pictures of the current room are attached.

I have two concerns, the first being the color. Is it better to go with a contrasting color if using two different colors of tile in the same room? Secondly, the existing tile has a rough edge and wider grout lines. Would using a tile with a straighter edge and smaller grout lines just be too much of a difference? Has anyone seen or done mixed tiles in this type of manner? Or would you recommend something different?

For a seating area like this the natural action would be to place an area rug beneath the seating area. I suspect the problem is the large curved fireplace that doesn't allow a standard size area rug to be used. That's why this solution was created for this area.

If the carpet needs to be removed because of staining etc then I would simply install new carpet in the same area and not tile. Consider the acoustics of only having tile in the area. Not what most people what to live with.

You don't have to select a solid cut pile carpet. You could select a patterned carpet for the area for a different appearance.

BTW that bookcase and cabinet are not working on the far wall. Do you have an office room you can move them to?

Thanks for the comment. Sorry, I should have elaborated. We have an older cat that has some health issues and is causing problems with the carpet (i.e. not always using the litter box). I need solid surface flooring. Replacing the carpet with more carpet is not an option.

Oh, and the bookcase and cabinet do not go on that wall. I am in the middle of painting kids rooms, which is where they go.

Since you have a wall mount sink, most of the floor will be visible. Go with what you love. The 12x24 will look great and will give you the modern look you're going for.

Oh I didn't think about cleaning the carrara... is it really that difficult? Ugh... I love the hex border idea. I thought about an area rug, but I'm nervous about getting the spacing wrong without the tub in place. Or having real rugs overlap with the tile one. I'm also nervous about putting them around the tub in case the tub goes in place and they are off centered or something. I have OCD fears ;) Thank you for showing me photos of your lovely bathroom shanghaimom! Any suggestions for a backspash? I'm thinking about a blue-ish wall color too. This bathroom is so pretty:

NafNaf--Forgive me I am not sure what is different in what you are suggesting? Virgil-- I am not good with the descriptions, but the the house sits in a hill and the sunporch is above the basement patio at least for part of it, the garage is under the house. The lot is pie shaped with the great room facing the narrow end of the pie. I have been working on this all morning and moving furniture in my current living room and measuring and graphing again to double check. Right now my plan will fit a 7.5 x 9.5 sectional facing the west wall, that wall will have built ins and house the tv. The far end of sectional will be about 8' from the TV, this is the exact set up we have in our current home and the configuration is very cozy but nice, also the "L" will be open to stairs, hall etc so not closed off. On the fire place end, I feel like I can set furniture(possibly a pair of 4' settees arranged opposite or a combination of smaller chairs and a settee) about 4' from the back of the sectional and comfortably flow between the sitting areas on the stair side---I measured with the swing of the doors etc. I am keeping in mind that yes its tight if the doors are open but that will not be often. So with my furniture arranging I realized that the slider will just not fit, its much better with large windows that open. I am thinking 4, 6' casements.

Thanks, all of you! Really appreciate the input. Will get dimensions of the room but we don't have (permanent) furniture yet so we can really choose what is ideal for the room. We are moving from a small apartment and have a few random pieces but no keepers. Undecided on TV in the room really. There is a nice family room downstairs with wired in sound where we would have a TV so leaning against. Love the idea of a TV free zone and a 3-seater and 4 chairs would be a nice amount of seating. However with 4 kids, we might end up wanting one there.

Then I would consider carpet tiles from FLOR that can be picked up and cleaned at the sink. No sense installing tile that will never look appropriate. You don't need much carpet. Here is a source for overruns of carpet tiles. Very inexpensive.
