Brugmansias and wet feet -- yay or nay?

Hi GWers,

I'm in Central Mass in Zone 5. I've got a 15 year old tree-like 8' tall brugmansia that I drag in and out of my basement every year that will usually provide blooms before the end of summer is near. I usually dig a small hole in the ground and sink the brugs pot in that for the summer. This year I dug a small hole on the edge of our pond. There was water in the bottom of the hole when I put the pot in and I thought that maybe this would provide the extra water that brugs need on a too-regular basis. LOL It's only been about a week, but the new location, with extra sun doesn't seem to be perking it up at all. Yellowing leaves, not much new growth... Wondering if the dropping leaves are due to roots sitting in water all the time? I may just return it to its old location.... I thought the extra sun would help it bloom faster, but maybe water is not helping. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your advice! DFC
