A Morning of Pleasant Surprises in the Garden
It's hotter than Hades this morning, but three delightful surprises awaited me on the garden walk.
Wonderful surprise #1; Michigan Nikki is alive and lovely! I thought I planted this one in the ground two falls ago. That plant died, so it was not Michigan Nikki. This one bloomed in a pot where the name on the label faded away. Hooray! Michigan Nikki lives and was a hardy enough evergreen to survive two bad winters in a pot. I crossed with some of my seedlings!
Wonderful surprise #2: Inviting Romance had blue tones in the eye today, and the bloom looked terrific. Unfortuately it's blooming in the foliage this season, but that didn't stop me from being enchanted by the bloom's beauty.
Wonderful surprise #3: Princess Diary acquired a cute little friend, a polka-dotted moth!

Born in California, after several days of throwing splotchy blooms, has been good for two days in a row. Three perfect blooms today - but not close together. Here are all three.

Any pleasant surprises this year?
Comments (3)Several years ago I planted a Persicaria 'Crimson Beauty'. But it wasn't until this year, after my new back porch was built, that I really appreciated it. From that vantage point, the 'Crimson Beauty', which is just now passing its prime, stands behind a Miscanthus 'Gracillimus'. In the afternoon, from about 3 P.M. until 5 P.M. or so, the light makes those two plants absolutely glow. Other plants in the picture include Sedum 'Autumn Joy' to the right of the Miscanthus (the flower heads are the same color as the Persicaria blooms), and Perovskia. (For those of you who don't know this terrific Persicaria, yes it is a relative of the dreaded Japanese Knotweed, but I've had it for 4 or 5 years and it's a clumper and doesn't seed around either. It's about 12 feet tall with the typical bamboo like stems, and the blooms, which appear in every leaf axil, start out ivory and turn to a rich cherry red. Comments (5)I was looking around today and have a few surprises...I do have an anemone coming back that I thought was not hardy here. One out of three bulbs is better than none. Plus I have a patch of self sown seedlings that are near a Delphinium that I love and I am hoping that is what they are. Lupines self seeded and I left the pansies in the pot outdoors all winter and I just noticed there are a lot of little seedlings just popping up! My favorite variety last year too. Then to top it all off, I was so excited to see a 15x3ft area that I had annual portulaca has a lot of seedlings popping up. I am keeping my fingers crossed that is what they are. I put in an apricot portulaca right up next to the street, in an area that perennials one after the other have not made it, with the idea it might self seed and come back every year....so that would tickle me. Oh, and I just remembered I had a callirhoe seedling pop up from NEWFS seeds in a winter sown container. Excellent! Last year I tried it and had none. All in all...a fun day. 5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoMantis - Princess Diary survived two of our bad winters, so its proven hardy here. I also love the blooms, and they always open without issue. The Princess multiplies well. It's only about three inches shy of the registered 30 inch scape. Most importantly to me, it is setting seed pods. So, in my opinion, it has all positives.
