Speed oven question: Miele, Bosch, other, or nothing?

I've read thread after thread on this topic so I'm posting in hopes someone can help me sort this out.

I'm on my second renovation kitchen renovation in 5 years, due to moving states. In our last house we were pretty happy with all of our decisions; the one thing we wished we had was a second oven, mostly for baking two pizzas at the same time (weekly or twice/month) and the occasional need at holiday time. In our new house, we're lacking the space again for a second oven.

I have since read that you can bake two pizzas at once with two pizza stones in the same oven, so I may have solved that problem but I'm still liking the idea of having something that can serve the purpose of a microwave and a small second oven when needed. If I can also and get rid of my toaster oven, that would be even more amazing--but I've read that I will likely still need a toaster. I also use my toaster oven for reheating things that don't do well in the microwave, so if I could use the speed oven for that it may still be worth it to me to gain the counter space.

So our original plans were to do a 36 inch dual-fuel range and a regular microwave with a trim kit, installed under the counter on the perimeter...but then I got interested in speed ovens. Our installation will be under counter for either appliance. Given that I have never used a speed oven, at this point my interest is in having a useful small second oven for cooking (that I might use instead of the oven in the 36 inch range), as a microwave by itself or as a small oven to reheat things...less so using convection with microwave, but maybe I will be wowed once I actually use them together!

Budget wise, about the most I can accommodate is 2K. I've read the Miele is the most functional as a really amazing oven, but the 30 inch is not in my budget, so this leaves me with the 24 inch Miele: https://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/H6X00BM.html Is the 24 inch large enough? We are a family of 4 and I use the oven for roasting veggies and fish, a few times a week.

Or then there is Bosch, which is more affordable but there are so many options I couldn't sort out the differences (Benchmark, 800 series, 500 series, 24 inch, 27 inch and 30 inch). Some had terrible reviews, but it seems many on here like the Bosch?

Are there other brands to consider? Can you put your own cookie sheets/baking pans in any of these ovens? Thanks for any advice!

There are plenty of posts on the speed oven, particularly Miele. Most people that have one seem to like it. I have one and would recommend. I think most people, myself included, find the combination "speed cooking" to be of somewhat marginal utility for a variety of reasons and typically use it as either an oven or MW independently. It does work well for a few things, particularly baked potatoes. I can make chicken nuggets in about 8 mins rather than 12 which doesn't sound like much, but sometimes it is the difference between kids making or missing the bus. Nothing is going to toast particularly well compared to an actual toaster, I have a popup toaster that I keep in drawer for making actual toast.

You can use your own cookware as long as they fit. You can fit a 12" pizza. 16-18" round will not fit. In any mode that uses MW, one must exercise a little caution with how metal cookware is used. The miele comes with a glass tray (mine came with 2) that can be used in any mode, I leave it in all the time and sort of use it as a removable dishwasher safe oven bottom.

The 24" Miele seems to have the same interior dimensions as the 30" Miele (which I believe is relatively new, I don't think it was around when I was shopping about 1 1/2 years ago) and I'm pretty sure the 30" is essentially just the 24" with a trim kit. Despite being only 24" the Miele has roughly the same interior capacity as the Bosch 30" benchmark.

The Miele is setup better for undercounter installation, since it doesn't need a turntable in MW mode and comes with glass trays that pull out whereas Bosch does not.

Kind of puts the parts-and-service issue in perspective.... Smeg obviously trying to crack the US market now; whether they'll succeed we don't know. As for the aforementioned Smeg dishwashers rebranded as GE (and later DCS), that's how Bosch and LG got started in the US too. Bosch entered the US market in the '90s with only three products (all high-end dishwashers) and we all know what happened since. LG used to just rebrand their microwave ovens for others (and sell a few themselves under the Goldstar brand); it took less than a decade for them to become a major contender in all appliance product categories. Samsung didn't sell any major appliances here until about a decade ago under their own name. Meanwhile, several once-big US manufacturers have disappeared or been swallowed by bigger fish.

The problem is the voltage required. There just aren't that many 240 volt switches that do what you need. There are several 120 ones though. Your best bet will be to talk to whomever is going to do the electrical for your renovation and have him talk to his local supply house. I'm certain that these switches do exist, as there is one on one of our welders that is housed in a job box, but I have never seen an attractive one that I would put into a kitchen. But, I'm not that up to date on uncommon electrical components. Your electrician may not be either, but he can make the supply houses do more research for him. If there is a solution out there that will work and look attractive, I'd bet that the local supply house in a large metro area like yours would know of it. And since you will need the electrician to install it anyway, put the burden of research onto him and he can put it onto the suppliers. Have you thought about just choosing a more "retro" looking oven so as to not feel so ashamed of it's modern looks as to need to conceal it? Fortunately, I have a relatively large pantry (vs. a much smaller kitchen). So when I got the Miele Speed oven, I just moved my old Sharp microwave and my ancient, beloved, toaster oven into the pantry. Now, about 8 months after the remodel, I still use the toaster oven for toast, having never even tried to toast in the Miele. And the pantry's microwave gets used to do something quick (like melt butter) while the Miele is pre-heating, or baking, or whatever. Though these things only happen occasionally, its been often enough that I haven't seen my way to tossing out either old oven. The drawback, of course, is that there are 5 ovens in my little kitchen/pantry area, which seems excessive. And I suppose the pantry has less counter space for canned beans or whatever... As for the Miele's combination mode, I've only begun to explore this by using it to reheat things like casseroles -- Alton Brown's "Cauliflower Say Cheese", last night. Master Chef expects me to know how much these things weigh, which is a struggle, but last night's guess turned out just fine. Oh yeah, if you select Defrost mode, the Miele speed oven will heat in the range of 75 to 125 degrees. This setting is useful for cooking "raw" foods at 104. I did think about a steam oven as well, but there really was no way to fit it in there.

You can never have enough ovens. We have a 30" oven in addition to a 24" CSO and a 24" SpeedOven (incidentally, this is a wonderful combination). And still, there has been at least one meal, when I had to add a fourth improvised oven by using the gas grill on the deck. I also had to use a portable warming chest, and had to prepare a careful schedule for when to use which appliance. But then, I was cooking multiple courses for a gathering of more than 100 guests. Realistically though, 99% of the time, the combination of those two ovens should be enough. You might just have to do a little bit of planning on the rare occasions that you make huge amounts of food. But if budget is flexible, adding the SpeedOven wouldn't hurt. It's a good oven in its own right, and it can always serve as a great overflow option, when things get really tight. Is it mandatory? No, not at all? Will you enjoy having bought it? Yes, probably. It's a convenient luxury, if you regularly cook a lot.
