Can't believe it - final inspection...
Comments (9)Thanks, Amy. Actually, I thought we'd be in by last Oct or Nov. Feb 1st was the due date for our construction loan's last extension we were allowed (18 months from pouring footings), so no matter how you look at it, we're definitely running behind. We actually started *unofficially* sleeping here awhile ago, but for awhile had to run back to the mobile home to use the bathroom, and until last night, to use the kitchen. (Actually, there was a LOT of running back and forth last night, too, since we haven't moved anything over yet). We have some clothes over here since the mobile home laundry equipment quit and things migrated over and stayed. How complete: Door casing is about 80-90% finished, baseboard 95%, window casing 0%. 'Phase 1' of the cabinets are in, but without their doors and drawer-fronts yet. (We reduced the number of cabinets by about 1/3, so we could get the necessary ones completely done, then work away at the rest after moving in.) There is a definite need for some landscaping work. So, it's all cosmetic, but my dining room and living room floors are covered in plastic for several sawhorses sitting there with drying wood trim and cabinet doors that I'm finishing or painting. There's still a big chop saw for cutting trim in my kitchen, along with the contraption that bores holes for cabinet hinges, which is sitting on the island. My sewing room still has no laminate on the counters and is covered in trim lumber. Closet rods and shelves are here but not in, and we haven't even thought about window treatments. I had dreams of moving in and putting everything away, teaching the kids to keep the new house clean, neat, and organized from the start. They've developed bad habits living in the mobile home, where stuff was up around our ears and impossible to keep clean. I wanted them to see this place differently. Oh, well. We'll get there...Maybe by next October!...See MoreFinally! 'Moving in' to our renovated beach house... almost!
Comments (5)You're right, golddust, they have done an amazing job. Here are pictures from about 10 days ago. Since then, they have worked like crazy to get the house to where it is now. The floor guy laid and finished hardwood floors for the entire house in 4 days. The only one who dropped the ball was the electrician. All my kids woke up with colds today. It's going to be an interesting few days... Here is a link that might be useful: earlier pics...See MoreNervous about final inspection today
Comments (46)Thanks, everyone! I'm still shaking my head today about what wasn't inspected, but we did have regular and more thorough inspections along the way while building. I'm glad to know others experienced lackadaisical finals also. Congratulations to you, Amanda. You're geting so close to being done. DH was very happy that I didn't stop the inspector to come in and look at our new panel. I'll remember those words if something ever goes wrong. :) Caliente--I'm jealous of your ready supply of Meyer lemons! I made some delicious Meyer lemon curd last weekend, but I have to pay a decent price for my citrus up here in the north. I posted the margarita recipes in a KAW thread. Linked below. Comments (20)>>If it's any comfort to you, we failed our home inspection, too. A six-figure remodel including a 500sf addition, complete kitchen gut and re-do, and about 1000sf of new stamped concrete outside -- and what did he fail us for??? No smoke alarms in the bedrooms -- and the bedrooms weren't part of the remodel and weren't in the plans!!!>> This happened to us, too (I believe you're in San Diego County, right, oofasis? I'm in Poway). Last year - $45,000 addition to the house ONLY a family room - and we failed the final inspection for lack of smoke alarms in every bedroom. I said exactly the same thing to the inspector. That was on Friday, July 27th. That day, I went to Home Depot and bought 3 of the cheapest smoke alarms, because we already had smoke alarms right outside the bedrooms (and 1 in a bedroom already), and installed them myself. When she came back on Monday morning, they were up - but she came when 2 of the 4 bedrooms were occupied by sleeping people. I asked her if she'd take my word for it that I installed all 4 alarms, and told her that my husband was a swing shift worker trying to sleep. So she just looked at two of them and went with that. (I'm glad she didn't press the "test" button on any. One of the smoke alarms didn't have a working battery - the smoke alarm that was already installed.) We passed the second time, and that afternoon, started gutting the kitchen, for which we did NOT "need" any permits. DonnaR/CA...See More- 5 years ago
