I have a couple of concerns. First, how long can he comfortably live up there? If the room is 5 feet at the center, the side walls have what appears to be a fairly strong slope - not a lot of head room. Both my boys were 4 feet tall at age 5 - they wouldn't have been able to be up in a space like that for long. For safety sake, I wouldn't want the window to be able to be opened by him - but with a window ac unit, that could be an issue. And, in the case of a fire, he might need to be able to get out that way - is there just the one window? Assuming those issues can be addressed, then I say don't spend a lot on the space, because he likely can't be up there for a really long time. If he likes the baseball theme, by all means keep it, but if his heart lies elsewhere, then some simple curtain panels made from cotton fabric or even sheets would work for the window. Let his bedding be fun, and get him a couple of beanbag or other low-seating style chairs, plus a comfy rug if the floor isn't carpeted. For clothing storage, think about the inexpensive RTA pieces that you can get for closet storage that could sit along one area of the walls. A cubby-styles shoe rack can hold shoes, but also pairs of mittens, belts, hats, etc. A couple of the low shelves that are meant for shoes can stack and hold pairs of jeans and shorts, sweaters, t-shirts. Then add a couple of colorful bins for underwear and socks. If you have an area in which you could mount a rod, they also have the canvas shelves that hang over the rod and have 4 or 5 sections that are great for shirts, pj's etc. They come in colors and patterns, too. Check out places like Target for ideas.

Hi...In my opinion (my field is not interior design), but I sure love it. I haven't read all the responses as I wanted to look at it and develop my own opinions/thoughts. First, I would NEVER sacrifice your outside view....I would keep my living room there and minimize items. If it was me, I would replace the slip covers on the white chairs with a more fitted style (see below). I would move the couch away from the window to maximize the view (seriously some ppl don't have any view). So I would figure a way to angle the couch so you can have that view. I would hang my tv up in the right side corner of the window so it is away from sun and doesn't take up space. I would also move that white chest out (looks like a file cabinet). and replace it with a more modern table (see below). As for the white shelves surrounding the tv, I would declutter it as it can be very elegant with just a few items. I would replace the ceiling fan with a modern style (3 blade) and have your recessed lights changed to LED and on dimmers. I would add a large plant/tree in a decorative basket for added warmth. Definitely center the rug (we have the same style of sofa in the family room). The view to the kitchen is an easy fix by decluttering (again, I think you have great bones here). Finally, I would paint, or tile the area under the island, per your taste/style. Sorry if there are any duplicate pictures . Anyways, the choices are endless for you (see below).

I, too, vote for three or four chairs with a round coffee table. It looks conflicted with the buffet and the cabinet full of china. I understand you want to keep them, but they aren’t giving you the cozy library you want. There must be another room for them where they will look at home. If you cannot give on that, at least have two matching chairs, a round coffee table or ottoman, and two floor reading lamps. P. S. My previous home had a library with a wing chair, a rocking chair, a cozy chair, and a window seat and my antique desk. This house has a library with two red leather chairs, a wing chair, and two rocking chairs (DH and BIL have back issues). One of the nicest compliments was from my niece who noted that every place you would want to sit to read had a good lamp. Oh, if you like to play games, maybe you can find a sweet round antique table (36” diameter) of dining height (30”) instead of the coffee table.

Hello Maria I. N, The best person to answer your question is...... you! First, decide what you want out of the space - entertaining, quiet reading, do you need some home office space there? Next, think on the vibe - is it formal, fun, comfy? Then think on your personal style - chic? traditional? Edgy? From there you can really start putting the space together. In regards to colors; your wood tones are pretty flexible. You could keep bigger pieces of furniture in lighter solid shades and use patterns & deep tones on pillows, rugs etc. to make it all really pop.
