Please help with this substitution for Rouge Royal in San Jose Ca
Comments (7)In this garden 'Francois Rabelais' has been essentially rust free for more than 10 years. It is a short grower and has excellent rebloom. Unfortunately it has no fragrance. I like 'The Prince' as well, wonderful fragrance, gorgeous flower, but a dainty grower and TLC will benefit it greatly. A little afternoon shade to protect from sunburn and crisping flowers helps as well. 'Rouge Royale' has beautiful flowers but the rust is horrific. Rust and mildew resistance, 'Tuscan Sun' has been highly superior. 'Julia Child' also. Those are the first that come to mind, offhand....See MoreFor those who grow Rouge Royale....
Comments (33)I love ROUGE ROYALE because it is a top notch cut flower. As you can see from the images the quartered flower form is utter perfection. Never is a petal out of place. The blooms are also H-U-G-E! I've seen flowers that were the size of my outstretched hand. Amazing. The color is phenomenal: a rich ruby red that doesn't "blue" like so many other dark red Hybrid Teas. Then there is the petal texture: velvety on the top with a satiny reverse. Absolutely, positively gorgeous. Petals are also stiff with substance. Properly conditioned cut flowers will easily last a week in a vase. Loooooooong straight, strong stems. And don't get me started on the fragrance: intense and complex, rivaling such classics as General Jacqueminot and Souvenir du Docteur Jamain. The burgundy turned dark green leathery foliage is a perfect foil for the sumptuous flowers and the bush has a nice shape to boot. Trust me folks, this is THE true red reproduction rose we've all been looking for. If I had the room I'd grow five of these smoldering beauties....See Morerouge royale - escaped the shovel
Comments (8)Steve - I can't remember if it was Greenland Nurseries - outside of Sherwood Park, Alberta or if it was Holes Greenhouse in St. Alberta, Alberta. Well, if it can be said to be on steroids and bloomed well without disease, then, for sure I'm going to keep it!! It really is beautiful. Carol...See MoreI need info from Rouge Royale enablers!
Comments (0)I am looking at planting Rouge Royale but there seems to be very polarised views about this rose - it seems to do very badly for some (even some very experienced growers) and wonderfully for others. I am trying to figure out what this rose likes so I can choose the right spot for it in my garden. I need all your expertise please! If you can grow this rose can you please share information on your climate, soil, light, water, microclimate, and anything other special treatment you may give her to make her thrive.
